Mrs. Shulstad is survived by her loving daughters, Pauline (Al) Goodreau of Baraga and Kathleen (Robert) Acton of Howell, MI., 14 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren, and sister, Jeanne Lambert of Crandon, WI. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rosalie Waara, brothers, Peter, Edward, and John, and sisters, Cecilia, Pauline, and Kathleen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on December 17, 2007, with Father George Maki, celebrant and Father Thomas Schmied, con-celebrant. Interment in the Baraga Cemetery.
She was born April 21, 1932 in Ahmeek, Michigan, daughter to the late Joseph and Leona (Dompier) Schutte. Mary grew up in Baraga and graduated from Baraga High School in 1950. She attended Northern Michigan University where she received her LPN. Mary married William Kayramo in 1953 at St. Ann’s in Baraga. She worked as an LPN at Winkler Nursing Home for over 35 years.
Mary was a member of St. Ann’s Church and the American Legion Post 444 Auxiliary in Baraga. She enjoyed playing cards, loved old movies, and liked the sauna. She was a caregiver and a volunteer. Mary was very caring toward her family and loved to feed them; she had unconditional love for them.
Surviving are her son William (Sharri) Kayramo of Herman; son-in-law Paul Tesanovich of Herman; sister Carol (Fred) Ojala of Baraga; sisters-in-law Anne Schutte of Baraga and Helen Anderson of L’Anse; seven grandchildren, Sean Clements, Jalena and Vance Tesanovich, Tara, Tanya, Joseph, and Emily Kayramo; great grandson Easton Clements; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
Preceded in death are her husband William; daughter Julia Tesanovich on March 25, 2007; and brother James Schutte.
A funeral Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on December 15, 2007. Fr. Augustin George officiated. Spring burial in the Baraga Cemetery.
Mrs. Zeits was born in Lake Leelanau, Michigan on July 21, 1916, the daughter of Simon and Isabelle (Plamondon) Hahnenberg. She graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Lake Leelanau and attended Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI. She married Frank Zeits on December 2, 1939. She was employed at the Leland Courthouse in the early years, and after relocating to the Detroit area also worked as an inspector at the bomber plant in Ypsilanti, MI, as a nurse aide, and in the finance department at Wayne County General Hospital. Laura and her family moved to Baraga in 1967. She was employed as a bookkeeping clerk for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in Baraga until her retirement in 1979 and spent her remaining years at home lovingly caring for her family. Laura’s wonderful “green thumb” and her musical piano playing talents were always enjoyed by her family, friends and residents and staff of BCMH SNU.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Frank, children Joyce (Larry) Doele of Saline, MI, Alan of Tucson, AZ, Linda (Daniel) Gilevich of Wayne, MI, Faye (Ray) Lozier of Baraga, and Frank (Nikki) of Champion, MI; siblings Cecelia Bussey of Dearborn, MI, Willard Hahnenberg of Paw Paw, MI and Rose Marie Schramski of Suttons Bay, MI, ten grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Simon and Isabelle Hahnenberg, brothers Frederick, Loren, and Edward, and sister Rita Egeler.
A memorial mass was celebrated on Monday, November 12, 2007. Fr. George Maki officiated.
Jesse is survived by his parents, Jo-Ann Jaukkuri of Baraga, and Peter Jaukkuri of Baraga, brothers Peter Jr., and Joseph, sisters, Danielle, Elizabeth, and Vikki, grandmother, Marge Giddings of Baraga, niece, Breonna and nephew, Jordin. Numerous cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Gary “Poncho” Giddings, paternal grandparents, Paul and Melvina Jaukkuri, and his great grandmother, Marie Kemppainen.

She was born October 10, 1915, in Baraga, MI daughter to the late George and Anna (Butala) Ellenich. Margaret attended school in Baraga. She married Leo Archambeau on May 2, 1933, in Baraga. Margaret had various jobs in the community. Margaret enjoyed playing cards, baking, cooking, and loved her grandchildren.
She was a very active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Altar Society and the Catholic Lady Foresters and served as St. Ann’s Sacristan for many years.
Surviving are her sons James (Patricia) Archambeau of Wells, MI, Russell (Donna) Archambeau of Gladstone, MI; daughters Mary (George) Skuggen of Avon Lake, OH, Betty Jean (Russell) Barger of White Pine, MI, Ann (Kermit) Larson of Gladstone; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
Preceded in death are her husband Leo in 1997; grandsons James and Robert Archambeau; sisters Rose Clisch and Angeline Wadaga; and six brothers.
A mass of Christian Burial was held on August 31, 2007, Fr. Tom Schmeid officiated. Burial in the Baraga Cemetery.
She was born February 12, 1926, in Baraga, daughter of the late Nicholas C. and Marie (Ricken) Lindemann. Helen graduated from Baraga High School in 1944.
She married Bernard Tangen on November 23, 1946 in Assinins.
Helen was co-founder of Tangen Incorporated of Baraga and served as the bookkeeper for 22 years.
She was a member of St. Ann’s Parish.
Surviving are her sons, Sherman Tangen of Baraga, and Bradley of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; sisters, Ruth (Ernest) Gryka of Royal Oak, Mich., Elsie Byrne of Baraga; brother, Nicholas (JoDean) Lindemann of Baraga; sister-in-law, Helen Lindemann of Detroit; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Bernard, on February 4, 1997; and brother Joseph Lindemann.
A private committal service was held on Monday, June 18, at the Assinins Cemetery. Fr. George Maki officiated.
Mary Catherine Koskinen, 92, of Baraga, died Wednesday afternoon, January 10, 2007, with her family by her side, at Baraga County Memorial Hospital’s Skilled Nursing Unit.
She was born January 6, 1915, in Hancock, MI, a daughter of the late Richard A. & Gertrude (Ongie) Cote and had been a lifelong area resident. Mary was a 1932 Baraga High School graduate.
On January 9, 1943 she married Onnie K. Koskinen in Baraga and he preceded her in death on May 11, 1992.
She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga, St. Ann’s Altar Society, 3rd Order of St. Francis, the Lady Forester’s, American Legion Post #444 Auxiliary and the L’Anse Golf Club.
Catherine’s favorite room in her home was her kitchen. She loved to cook for her family and neighbors. Those who visited her always left her home well fed.
Catherine is survived by a daughter, Mary Kay (Tom) Clisch; sons, Jim (Lucille) Koskinen, Michael (Blanche) Koskinen of Baraga, Pat (Mary) Koskinen of Iron Mountain and Robert (Sally) Koskinen of Baraga; grandchildren, Sue Skytta, Shellie Usitalo, TJ Clisch, Stacey Clisch, Jimmer Koskinen, Julie Ruotsala, John, Mike, Craig, Kim, Jason, Carey, Mark, Scott & Gary Koskinen; 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Cote and a sister, Helen Cote.
Visitation Friday, January 12, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Jacobson Funeral Home in L’Anse. A parish prayer service at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 11 a.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga with Rev. Augustin George and Rev. Norman Clisch concelebrating. Visitation one hour prior to the mass in the church. Interment in the Baraga Cemetery in the spring.
Mr. Mansfeldt is survived by his loving children, John (Karen) Mansfeldt of Baraga, Sharon (Robert) Verbanac of Baraga, and Linda Grunwald of Searcy, AR., six grandchildren, Dana, Chris, Erick, Julia, Edwin, and Rebecca, and 10 great grandchildren. CECELIA MARION COOK, 86, of Baraga, died Thursday evening, October 5, 2006, at Bayside Village in L’Anse. She was born May 12, 1920, in Escanaba, Michigan, a daughter of John H. and Florence (Badger) Roberts.
Cecelia was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Baraga. Her leisure activities included bingo and participating in TOPS.
She is survived by three sons, John (Lillian) Messer of Baraga, Donald (Linda) Messer of Baraga and James Cook of L’Anse; three daughters, Lorraine Trisch of Troy, MI, Lucille (Harry) Renweck of Cheyenne, WY and Mary Cook of North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Dorsky of L’Anse and Florence Deschaine of L’Anse; and numerous nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Ike Messer and Kenneth Cook; brothers, John & Raymond Roberts; and a sister, Evelyn Asher.

WILFRED A. BUNKER, 80, of Baraga, MI. passed away Monday, October 2, 2006 in Baraga, MI. He had been in ill health for several years. Wilfred was born in Oconto Falls, WI. on September 3, 1926 son of the late Amos and Dora (Dashner) Bunker. He graduated from Oconta Falls High School and worked for a short time for the Frigo Cheese Company in Lena, WI. He was a career service man in the US Army and retired with the rank of Sergeant after 20 years of service. Wilfred married the former Esther Uusitalo in Milwaukee, WI. on December 5, 1970. While in Milwaukee he was employed for General Electric as an electrical inspector in the pacemaker division until ill health forced his retirement in 1987. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga, Baraga American Legion Post 444, and was a lifetime member of the Milwaukee American Legion. Wilfred's leisure activities included gardening and fishing.
Mr. Bunker is survived by his loving wife, Esther, step children, Wesley Kaurala of Baraga and Sylvia (Daryl) Jestila of L'Anse, step grandchildren, Gail, Tim, Amy, Arnold, Kim, Cindy, and Peggy, 9 step great-grandchildren, brother, Robert Bunker of Las Vegas, NV., and sister, Carol.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, October 6, 2006 from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga, MI. with Father George Maki, celebrant. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery. Family members honored Mr. Bunker as casket bearers. Baraga County Veterans, under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 conducted military honors.
Helen G.Cote, 92, was called to the Lord on Tuesday afternoon, September 5, 2006 at Baraga County Memorial Hospital in L’Anse. She was born October 21, 1913, in Houghton, a daughter of the late Richard Alphonse and Gertrude (Ongie) Cote and attended St. Ignatius School in Houghton and at an early age the family moved to Baraga. She graduated from Baraga High School in 1930 at the age of 16.
The week following graduation she was employed by Baraga Lumber Company as secretary. She held the job for three years and when the general manager resigned she was promoted to that position until the company dissolved some time later. Helen was then employed as Assistant Lumber Sales Manager for Ford Motor Company in L’Anse. It was then that the manager of the Ford Plant felt she was capable of selling lumber on the road, but it was unheard of at that time that a lady perform that duty. With the permission of the Detroit office she was given three days on the road and at the end of the three days she returned with orders for approximately six million feet of lumber. That was the start of her career on the road. Ford Motor Company closed the L’Anse plant in 1955 and she was employed as General Manager of Miller Lumber Sales in L’Anse. She remained with that company until her retirement in 1985. In all of her years on the road Helen had traveled approximately 200,000 miles.
Helen was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baragaland Senior Citizens, AARP and an honorary member of the National Hardwood Lumber Association.
Helen is survived by a sister, Catherine (Onnie) Koskinen of Baraga; niece, Mary Kay (Tom) Clisch; nephews, Jim (Cele) Koskinen, Michael (Blanche) Koskinen, Pat (Mary) Koskinen and Bob (Sally) Koskinen; great nieces and nephews, Sue Skytta, Shellie Usitalo, TJ Clisch, Stacey Clisch, Jimmer Koskinen, Julie Ruotsala, John, Mike, Craig, Kim, Jason, Carey, Mark, Scott and Gary Koskinen; and 23 great-great nieces and nephews.

(Theresa Seymour) Tangen of Alston, MI.; her siblings Leroy F. Paquette, of Merrill, WI.; Virginia M. (Bernard) Penokie, of L’Anse, MI.; Patricia A. (Dennis) Lane, of L’Anse, MI.; twelve grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren’ and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Kenneth A. Paquette, Ralph O. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on April 29, 2006 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Baraga with Father George Maki, celebrant. The family received friends at the church before the Mass. Interment took place in the Baraga Cemetery.
Elizabeth married Richard Jerome Bellaire on February 14, 1953.
She is survived by eight children, Joe Bellaire of Baraga, Margaret (Luis) Bonilla of Salinas, CA, Donna (Hondo) Avalos of Baraga, Ray (Roxann) Bellaire of Baraga, Patricia (Dave) Delisle of L’Anse, Charles (Sharon) Bellaire of Peyton, CO, Cheryl (Jerry) Armstrong of Salinas, CA and Norma (John) Domitrovich of Baraga; 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a borther, Carol Jarvey of Escanaba; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; son, Lawrence; and 4 brothers, Bud, Howard, Joe and Dave Jarvey.
Visitation was held May 11, 2006 in St. Ann’s Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at noon with Rev. George Maki officiating. Interment in the Baraga Cemetery.
Following his discharge from the service, Joe worked as a truck driver for Pettibone and was employed for a time at Celotex. In 1968 he was hired as the Baraga Village Superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1987.
Joe married the former Joan Meyer in Utica, MI, on September 4, 1970. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Baraga and the Baraga American Legion Post 444. Joe was an avid hunter and fisherman, and did independent logging for a time. He was skilled at making furniture and enjoyed collecting maple syrup.
Mr. Ross is survived by his loving wife, Joan, children, David (Barbara) Ross of Gladstone, Joseph F. (Renee) Ross of Painsdale, Tom Macke of Baraga, Shirley Ross of Colorado, Nancy (John) Ross of Rhode Island, and Janet (Bruce) Ross of Baraga, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his son, his wives Shirley Selden and Pauline Kinnunen, and several aunts and uncles.
A memorial service for Mr. Ross at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 23, 2006 at the Reid Funeral Service and Chapel, L'Anse with Father George Maki officiating. Spring interment in the Baraga Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral chapel on Thursday from 10 am until time of the service. Baraga County Area Veterans under the direction of the Baraga American Legion Post 444 will conduct military honors at 11 a.m. The family invites friends to join them for fellowship and luncheon at the Baraga American Legion Post 444 following the services.
Mr. Tembreull is survived by his loving wife, Janet, children, Joseph of L'Anse, Paul of Pelkie, Edward (Christy) of L'Anse, James (Sara) of Keweenaw Bay, Christine (Tim) Sanregret of L'Anse and Julie (Andy) Van Fleet of New Haven, MI., grandchildren, Michael, Taylene, Jennifer, Alec, Courtney, Jerry, and Autumn, brothers, Pat (Lois) of L'Anse, Bill (Marlene) of L'Anse, Dale (Cecilia) of L'Anse, Mike (Sheron) of Michigamme, and his uncle Donald (Carol) Tembreull of Freeport, MN. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Daniel, his grandson, Brendan, and several aunts and uncles.

Mrs. Tahtinen is survived by her loving children, James (Mary) Tahtinen of Tampa, FL., Gerald (Nancy) Tahtinen of Eagle River, WI., Dale (Alice) Tahtinen of Baraga, Sally (Emery) Borgen of L’Anse, and Susie (Fred) Dempster of Naperville, IL., 9 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, sisters, June Allm of Lawton, Okalahoma, Norraine Kosturik of Auburn, Indiana, Jeannine Pelto of Baraga, and Marie Tahtinen of Troy, MI. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister and seven brothers.

Mrs. Clisch is survived by her loving children, Gerald (Shirley) of Baraga, Father Norm of Iron River, MI., Paul (Helen) of Baraga, Thomas (Mary Kay) of Baraga, Roland of Baraga, Colleen (Thomas) Armstrong of Milwaukee, WI., and Lisa (James) Mantila of Ishpeming, MI., 28 grand children, 48 great-grandchildren, sister, Margaret Archambeau of Escanaba. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her son, Roger in 1998, and his wife, Shirley in 2001, a sister, and six brothers.

Lester worked as a lumberjack for several years before becoming employed as a miner with the CCI. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and Baraga Fire Department and was a former chief. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, reading, history and was an avid Democrat.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Eva Miron of Baraga; sons, Jerome (Lynn) Miron of Cadillac, MI, Stephen (Lorraine) Miron of Brighton, MI, Henry (Roberta) Miron of Fenton, MI, Gregory (Phillis) Miron of Apple Valley, MN and Nicholas Miron of Pearce, AZ; daughters, Virginia Riley of Seattle, WA, Eve Erickson of Lakeville, MN, Christine (Gary) Uren of Hamilton, MT and Amy (Mark) Burris of Everett, WA; 20 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, Joe (Mary )Miron of Honar, MI and Roger Miron of Baraga; and a sister, Mary Frances LeClaire of Baraga. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Liisa Miron; brothers, Donald, Earl, Louis and Raymond Miron; and sisters, Rita LeClaire and Norma Ross.
