1. Abraham SLOUGH(1)
was born about 1782 in North Carolina. He died on 13 May 1867 in Owen
County, Indiana. Abraham and his family moved from Stokes County, North Carolina
to Owen County, Indiana about 1830. He purchased land in Owen County on December
2, 1830, September 1, 1838 and August 1, 1839 for a total of 160 acres. All
three parcels of land were in Township 9 - N (Jefferson), Range 5 - W, Section
28.
I am unable to find Abraham in the 1830 census of any state. Since his first
land purchase was in December, 1830, he must have been moving when the census
was taken.
In the 1840 Owen County, Indiana census Abraham is listed as the head of household
with one male in the 15 - 20 age group and one female in the 15 - 20 age group.
This must have been Abraham JR and Eve.
At the present time I do not have proof that Abraham is Hamilton's father but
I feel very strong that he is. In the 1840 Indiana census the only Sloughs enumerated
are Abraham, Adam, Daniel and Henry. The only Slough with a male enumerated
of the right age is Henry and Henry would have been to young to be Hamilton's
father. I believe that Hamilton lived with Henry to help him build his new homestead.
Henry purchased his land on August 1, 1839.
In all of the census where we found Hamilton it shows his birthplace as Kentucky
and both of his parents birthplaces as North Carolina. I feel that he was born
in Kentucky while they were moving to Indiana from North Carolina.
Another reason I feel that Hamilton is the son of Abraham is they lived less
than eight miles apart in 1850.
Abraham died intestate in 1867 and Hamilton is not listed anywhere as an heir.
However, in 1867 Hamilton had been gone to the gold fields for at least fifteen
years and could have been presumed dead.
Anna H. was
born about 1785 in North Carolina. She died on 30 Jul 1866 in Owen County, Indiana.
