4. Robert Edward (Fred) SLOUGH Jr(1) was born on 25 Apr 1878 in Comanche County, Texas. He
died on 7 Sep 1948 in Crosbyton, Texas. He was buried on 9 Sep 1948 in Dickens, Texas.
Robert was called Fred by all of his friends and family.
The following story was told by Blackie Stephens to Bob Stephens:
When Fred and Gertie got married, Uncles' Cal and Fayet assembled a herd of cattle and
hired Grandpa to drover them to Uncle Cal's ranch in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. So, the two
of them, and a crew of wranglers drove the cattle to New Mexico. Fred was supposed to work
on the ranch for Cal. For what ever reason that relationship didn't work out and
eventually they ended up in Roswell.
While living in Roswell Grandpa worked for the Roswell Wool and Hide Company. As the name
implies they dealt in wool and animal hides. However, a profitable sideline to the
business was the delivery of alcoholic spirits and beverages to the saloons in and around
Roswell. Grandpa drove the beer wagon. When Grandpa would come back for a visit, he'd
always ask Blackie to take him to the old Roswell Wool and Hide place of business, where
he would reminisce about "the good ole' days". He was married to Minnie Gertrude
RYE on 7 Jan 1903 in Eastland County, Texas.
5. Minnie Gertrude RYE was born
on 15 Apr 1879 in Delta County, Texas. She died on 7 Nov 1954 in Childress, Texas. She was
buried on 8 Nov 1954 in Dickens, Texas. Her first marriage was to a man named Couch. There
were no children to this marriage.
Bob Stephens tells a story he heard about when Grandma Slough and Fred went to the movie
in Dickens, Texas. She said she was afraid the Lord would come and find her there, and she
new it must be as sinful as dancing. She said Fred embarrassed her. A bad man was behind a
rock with a rifle, waiting to waylay the good man. As the good guy approached the rock
Fred jumped up and yelled for him to "watch out! that jasper behind the rock is
drawing down on you". Children were:
i. Lelia Emma SLOUGH
was born on 7 Aug 1903 in Roswell, New Mexico. She died on 5 Dec 1982 in Riverbank,
California. She was buried on 8 Dec 1982 in Turlock Mem Park.
ii. Dixie Lee SLOUGH
was born on 24 Apr 1905 in Eastland County, Texas. She died on 25 Jul 1992 in Turlock,
California.

iv. Maude Dorothy
SLOUGH was born on 24 May 1908 in Texas. She died in Jul 1983 in Childress, Texas. SSAN
was 454-14-0585
v. Green Lafayette
(Fay) SLOUGH was born on 24 Aug 1910 in Dickens, Texas. He died on 17 Jul 1979 in Dickens,
Dickens County Texas. (2) He was buried in Dickens
Cemetery.
