2. Robert Edward (Ed) SLOUGH Sr(2) (3) was born on 16 May 1850
in Greene County, Indinia. (4)(5)
He died on 22 Jun 1883 in Carbon, Texas.(5) He was
buried in Windham Ranch, Carbon, Texas. Located thirteen miles south of Carbon, Texas on
the Windom Ranch. The small cemetery is in front of the ranch house, and about 1000 feet
south of the Sabanna River. Called Thannisch Cemetery. Robert Edward Slough Sr. was a real
pioneer in Eastland and Comanche Counties, Texas. Robert Edward was a Texas Ranger from
Sep 19, 1873 till April 30, 1874. He served as a Private with Company D Minute Men,
Comanche County. His commanding officer was W.C. Watkins.
According to Eastland County records he married Pinkney P. K. Harrison Thannisch on
February 14, 1875. The ceromoney was conducted by T.C. McGough, the Justice of the Peace.
Pinkney's first husband, W.B. Thannisch, died on April 4, 1873. She had three children by
her first marriage, Mary K., William and Theodosia.
The following is a quote from a book on the early history of Eastland County:
The line of settlements in the County did not change for several years after its
organization. Residents from other states "picked up and moved" to Texas and
soon neighbors gathered close in small communities.
One old settler, the Rev. C. Brashears, said there were six families at or near McGough
Springs, three at Mansker Lake, one settlement at Flannagan's consisting of a cow-ranch
and one family; another on Palo Pinto Creek of two or more families; two families on the
Sabanna River, with three at Ellison's Springs, and three or four at Desdemona, then known
as Hog Town. These, said Mr. Brashears, made up the entire population of Eastland County
when he came.
"This was a fine stock country" he went on. "Game was plentiful, such as
bear, wolf, deer, turkey, buffalo, with a few panther. Even some wild cat, fox, opossum,
skunk and Indian. Wild horses roamed here at the time with any number of wild cattlle.
This was also a fine hog country and hogs were plentiful."
Once the County was organized, people began to recognize its potentialities, and although
in 1873 scarcely seventy-five required voters could be found, by 1875, only two years
later when the County Seat was permanently located in Eastland, there were one hundred and
twenty-three voters, and the census of 1880 showed 4,855 as the population of the county.
End of quote from the book.
It is very possible and likely that Robert Edward was one of the two families mentioned as
being on the Sabanna River as this is where he and Pinkney are buried.
He was married to Pinkney Penelope Keith HARRISON (daughter of John
S. KEITH and Penelope (Penny) JETER) on 14 Feb 1875 in Eastland
County.(5) Pinkney Penelope Keith
HARRISON(2) (6)
was born on 27 Nov 1846 in Georgia. (7) She died on
30 Mar 1917 in Eastland County, Texas.
OBITUARY OF PINCKNEY PENELOPE SLOUGH
Once again we have been called upon to give up another of our old settlers. This time the
death angel stopped at the home of W.L. Lusk and called for the spirit of Sister P.P.
Slough, who made her home in her declining years with her daughter, Mrs Lusk.
On March 30th, (1917) between eight and nine o'clock the summons came, and her spirit
winged its way to the God who gave.
Miss P.P. harrison was born in Donophon, Mo., Nov 29, 1846 and was married to W.B.
Thannish in the year 1861, and moved to Texas and settled in Comanche County, in 1872 on
Sabano creek, and was one of the earliest sellers of this part of the county. Her first
husband, W.B. Thanish, died May 22, 1874 and was buried at the Morgon Cemetery.
She was married to R.E. Slough in 1875. R.E. Slough died in 1883.
Mrs. Slough was the mother of ten children, six by her first marriage, and four by her
last.
Six children still survive, four having preceded her to the great beyond.
Being left a widow with six children, she fully realized the hardships of pioneer life.
She was converted in early life, and was one of the charter members of the Missionary
Baptist Church, organized at Elm Grove, on Sabanno, on the line of Eastland and Comanche
counties.
She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother, and was loved by everyone who knew her.
Mrs. Slough was sick only three days, and her death was a shock to her children and
friends, altho she has been very feeble for several years.
Mrs. W.L. Lusk and R.E. Slough, were the only ones of her children that were with her when
death came. Her daughter Mrs. C.O. McKeehan of Cottonwood, did not reach home until after
her death. And her daughter, Mrs. T.J. Hicks of Afton, and K.E. Slough of Cloudcroft,
N.Mex. did not receive the message in time to come.
H.S. Anglin held the funeral services at the Morgon Cemetery, Saturday, March 31, (1917)
at 3:00 o'clock, and her remains were laid between those of her husbands, to wait
resurrection.
