OBITUARY OF PINCKNEY PENELOPE SLOUGH
Once again we have been called upon to give up another of our old settlers. This time the
death angel stopped at the home of W.L. Lusk and called for the spirit of Sister P.P.
Slough, who made her home in her declining years with her daughter, Mrs Lusk.
On March 30th, (1917) between eight and nine o'clock the summons came, and her spirit
winged its way to the God who gave.
Miss P.P. harrison was born in Donophon, Mo., Nov 29, 1846 and was married to W.B.
Thannish in the year 1861, and moved to Texas and settled in Comanche County, in 1872 on
Sabano creek, and was one of the earliest sellers of this part of the county. Her first
husband, W.B. Thanish, died May 22, 1874 and was buried at the Morgon Cemetery.
She was married to R.E. Slough in 1875. R.E. Slough died in 1883.
Mrs. Slough was the mother of ten children, six by her first marriage, and four by her
last.
Six children still survive, four having preceded her to the great beyond.
Being left a widow with six children, she fully realized the hardships of pioneer life.
She was converted in early life, and was one of the charter members of the Missionary
Baptist Church, organized at Elm Grove, on Sabanno, on the line of Eastland and Comanche
counties.
She was a kind and loving mother and grandmother, and was loved by everyone who knew her.
Mrs. Slough was sick only three days, and her death was a shock to her children and
friends, altho she has been very feeble for several years.
Mrs. W.L. Lusk and R.E. Slough, were the only ones of her children that were with her when
death came. Her daughter Mrs. C.O. McKeehan of Cottonwood, did not reach home until after
her death. And her daughter, Mrs. T.J. Hicks of Afton, and K.E. Slough of Cloudcroft,
N.Mex. did not receive the message in time to come.
H.S. Anglin held the funeral services at the Morgon Cemetery, Saturday, March 31, (1917)
at 3:00 o'clock, and her remains were laid between those of her husbands, to wait
resurrection.
