...................I Remember....................
Santa Claus and the Easter bunny
Toasting marshmallows, til they were soft and runny
Wearing bloomers made from a flower sack
Going to the privy out in the back
Cardboard over the holes in one sole
Hoping longjohn lumps wouldn't show.....
Watching the blacksmith shoe many a horse
Walking miles to church, as a matter of course
Carrying a lunch in syrup pails to school
Sandwiches freezing in winter as a rule
Bringing in wood for teacher's big heater
Taking mom's carpets out and using the beater......
Dad being an eighty hour a week toiler
Mother heating wash water in the copper boiler
The kitchen range heated seven days a week
Wives being quiet, obedient and meek
Fourth of July fireworks in our back yard
Canning one's own food and rendering lard.......
Neighbours coming to visit after chores
No one worrying about locking his doors
Reaching old age gradually rung by rung
Oh, how I remember being young........

.....................Nothing To Do....................
Mother, on a winter's day,
Milked the cows and fed them hay,
Slopped the hogs, saddled the mule
And got the children off to school.
Did a washing, mopped the floors,
Washed the windows and did some chores.
Cooked a dish of home-dried fruit,
Pressed her husband's Sunday suit.
Swept the parlor, made the bed,
Baked a dozen loaves of bread.
Split some firewood and lugged it in,
Enough to fill the kitchen bin.
Cleaned the lamps and put in oil,
Stewed some apples she thought would spoil.
Churned the butter, baked a cake,
Then exclaimed, "For heaven's sake
The calves have gotten out of the pen."
Went out and chased them in again.
Gathered the eggs and locked the stable,
Back to the house and set the table.
Cooked a supper that was delicious
And afterward washed up all of the dishes.
Fed the cat and sprinkled the clothes,
Mended a basketful of clothes.
Then opened the piano and began to play
"When You Come To The End Of A Perfect Day!"
