Family legend says that John SMITH/SCHMIDT was born in Germany near the Rhine River; came to America about 1785 and worked as an indentured servant topay for his sea passage.. He settled in Allegheny Co. PA and married Elizabeth RETZIER who was born about 1770 in Pennsylvania. About 1814, he moved his family to Floyd Co., IN (Indiana Territory).

 John received a land grant from the United States at the land office at Vincennes, IN and on 15 August 1815, he bought from Edmund Given and wife: 160 ac. for $500.00 located in Section 22, Franklin twp. 3, range 5 south, Floyd Co. On 4 Nov 1815, he sold 2 lots #62 and #89 in Corydon, Harrison Co., IN to Joseph McMahon. Between 1815 and 1835, John Smith and his sons and daughters owned approximately 6000 acres of land in Harrison and Floyd counties in Indiana. The Gresham and Pennington families owned most of the rest. (see Deed Books A & B)
