Note: Save the information below to include with the original John the immigrant from Wayne Lanier to the Lanier list, 5/17/02.
"Trying to prove a negative is impossible. There has been considerable
debate regarding the subject of John the immigrant and the question of his
having a son named John. This was addressed by L. Ingersoll in her book,
p. 13. The first two paragraphs on the page state:
"John Lanier took part in Bacon's Rebellion, and is said to have encamped
at Jordans Point; John Lanier Sr. was then forty five years of age. From a
manuscript in the Library of Congress, written by "T. M." (Thomas Matthews)
twenty years after the Rebellion, when he was at least 60 to 70 years old,
said that "he was too old to camp out at Jordans Point, and that was left
to the young men". He also wrote that Nathaniel Bacon was not yet thirty
and was in command of the group. This SEEMS (caps mine) to show that there
were two John Laniers, an older one with sufficient dignity and authority
to represent the people of Charles City to the Governor, and a younger one
of twenty two years who joined the fighting forces of Nathaniel Bacon.
"No records have been found in London or East Greenwich of the marriage of
John Lanier to Lucreece, or the birth of John Jr. who is as yet
"traditional" in Virginia. The search continues in London, and with the
loss of the Charles City records, no answer can ever be found there; John
Lanier born 1631 may possibly have lived until 1719, but it does not seem
probable in those early days of primitive living, that a man would survive
eighty eight years. He was still living 1683." [Louise Ingersoll]
I have in my records a John and a John, Jr. as reported in Ingersoll's
book, and most definitely would like to see absolute proof of John Jr's.
existence. However, at that time in this nation's history, the people were
trying to survive in a hostile land; they had little time or inclination to
think of how their lack of record keeping would be seen 400 years hence.
In the FOREWORD, L. Ingersoll writes"This book represents twenty years of
research, WITH MUCH LEFT TO FIND (caps mine); the object was to find the
correct English ancestry, and that of the several immigrants who came to
Virginia. It is hoped that it will help those not included here, to find
their branch on the Family Tree."
Regards,
Wayne"
