BRIEF LIFE HISTORY OF JAMES GREEN BROWNING

James Green Browning was born on 22 May 1808 at Gallatin, Sumner County,
Tennessee. He was the son of Edmund Browning and Sarah Allen. As far as I know he
spent his early years in Sumner County. He was a Blacksmith, farmer, and Cooper by
trade. He met Mary Ann Neel (Neal) who was also known as Polly Ann, and they were
married on 20 November 1827 in Sumner County, Tennessee. James and Mary Ann lived
in Dry Fork, Sumner County, Tennessee, where two children were born to them:
Clifton Smith, born 15 September 1828 and Sarah Ann, born 10 October 1830. From
there they moved to Fairfield, Wayne County, Illinois, where a third child, Edmund
Thomas, was born 30 November 1833.

Soon afterward they moved to Adams County, Illinois, and four more children
were born to them: David Henry, born 16 March 1835; Jane Neal, born 4 August 1837;
Isaac Austin, born 25 December 1840; and Eliza Elizabeth (also known as Mary Ann
America), born 4 August 1843.

It was while they lived in Adams County that they heard about the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At this time part of the family was baptized,
Clifton being the first on 15 January 1842. Mary Ann, the mother, was next in May
1842 and James Green followed on 15 December 1842. By the year 1856 all the other
children were baptized into the church.

The family moved to Nauvoo, Illinois and, along with the other saints, were
cruelly persecuted. They were closely associated with the Prophet Joseph Smith.
It was in the year 1846 that they started the exodus with the pioneers to Council
Bluffs, Iowa, where Delilah Charilla was born on 4 August 1848.

It was in the year 1850 that through the help of James' brother Jonathan they
were able to come to Utah. Jonathan outfitted them and helped them move. After
arriving in Utah, James and Mary Ann settled in Ogden, Weber County, and raised
their family.

James lived in polygamy. He married Olive Hills 22 March 1852; they had two
girls, Mary Ann and Eveline. He then married Harriet Louisa Chase on 20 July 1855;
they had no children. His fourth wife was Ann Wood; they had five children: James
Green, Jr.; George Andrew; Edmund Jonathan, and Lewis Wood Browning.

James and Mary Ann received their endowments on 19 January 1852 in the
President's office, and they were sealed for time and eternity on 20 January 1852.
At this time President Brigham Young did marriages and sealings in his office, as
there were no temples at that time. President Young told them to go to the Temple
when it was finished and have it done over.

James Green was the second bishop of Weber County. He was a member of the
Territorial Legislature and he also served a mission for the church in England in
1860. At the age of 70 he passed away on 20 November 1878 in Ogden, Utah, where he
was buried.
