1768 - 1872
David, named in his father, Phillip Garner's, will was born in North Carolina.
Prom his documented death date 3 September 1872, "age 104 years", his
approximate birth date would be 1768. His father, Phillip, was of German origin.
David's mother was Elizabeth Winkler, the daughter of Lewis Winkler.
Land Records of Rowan County, North Carolina show that David owned considerable
Land. His father's will, probated in 1814, gave him 300 acres, 200 acres of
which was designated as "my plantation on which I now live."
David married Jane Stephens, known as "Jennie" (the daughter of Richard
Stephens
and wife Martha Robards.) They had ten children born in North Carolina, namely:

George 1 July 1807
Phillip 11 Oct. 1808 16 Sept. 1872
David 30 July 1818 29 April 1889
Nancy 1812 30 Oct, 1886

Eliza
Henry 13 June 1827 9 Nov. 1898
Miranda April 1833 18 Sept. 1886
Their eleventh child Miranda, was born in Illinois.
William said he "was seventeen years when the family moved from North Carolina
to Adams County, Illinois" and Henry said he "was seven years when
his Family moved to Adams County, Illinois." David said he was fifteen at
that time so the date of the move in 1834 is well fixed.
The eldest daughter of David and Jane was Nancy, who married Jackson WakefieLd
and went to Fresno, California prior to the time the family moved to Illinois.
David's son George, who married Elizabeth Hedrick, and his son John, who married
Mary Ann Olive Rawson, also went to California and settled in San Bernardino
area.
Phillip, the second son of David, married Mary Hedrick, (sister of George's wife)
4 April 1830 In North Carolina and journeyed to Indiana and had their first three
children in Indiana and then crossed to Adams County, Illinois. David, the third
son of David and Jane, married Dolly Durfee in 1842 and Adams County, Illinois.
In 1846 David and Jane Stephens Garner were in Iowa and three of their sons,
Phillip, David and William volunteered in the Mormon battalion, which was called
by the United States Government to defend the Mexican border. Five hundred able-bodied
Mormon men left their families alone in covered wagons through that cold winter.
After reuniting with his family in the spring of 1848, William finally settled
in Pottowattamie County, Iowa and was a successful farmer. His brother Henry
and family, and their parents remained permanently in that area. Phillip and
David Jr. with their Families Settled in Ogden, Weber, Utah--David in North Ogden
and Phillip in South Ogden knows as Birch Creek.
The descendants of William and Henry in Iowa are familiar with the death and
burial of David. During his Later years he Lived with Henry and when David died
at his home 3 September 1872, he was buried on William's farm. William gave
a piece of his Land to Pottowattamie County for a cemetery which was called the
Garner Cemetery. The monument of David's grave still stands showing his age
104 years, and the date of his death.
Jane (Stephens) Garner went to San Bernardino, California with her son, George,
on his return to his home there and traveled by the Isthmus of Panama. She died
there 13 April 1786. The brown sandstone monument still stands giving her birth
date as 12 November 1786 and her age 81 years, 11 months 5 days.
Mary Marinda (Garner) Chadwick ate Sunday dinner with us about 1944 (she was
about 95). She is the granddaughter of David and Jane Garner through their son
David who settled in North Ogden. She told us that day about her grandmother
Jane visiting them and that she slept with her. She told of her Grandfather
being very old.
