FRANCIS HEDRICK
1780-1855
Francis Hedrick, my forefather, was born about 1780 in Virginia to Captain Peter
Hedrick and Margaret Hoerchelradt. While Francis was very young, the family moved
from
Virginia back to their homeplace on Four-Mile Branch in Rowan County, North Carolina.
Peter and Margaret had lived here since the early 1760's and owned nearly a thousand
acres.
The date of the marriage of Francis to Elizabeth Howard, who was born in Rowan,
North Carolina, has not been located. They had twelve children, eleven of whom
were
born in Rowan County. Inasmuch as Davidson County was formed from Rowan in
1822, the last child, Anne, was born in Davidson County.
The children were:

David 21 April 1803 Susanna Leonard 11 Oct. 1829
Henry 2 July 1804 Ruth

*My progenitor
After their marriage, the first two sons, David and Henry, went to White River
country near Paragon and Gossport in Indiana and made their homes. Elizabeth
and Mary,
who married Garner brothers in Rowan County, also moved to Indiana. In 1832,
Francis
and Elizabeth moved their "partly raised family" to White River country
in Indiana where
David and Henry were living.
Relative to the move the family, "they made the trip of 700 miles from North
Carolina to White River, Washington County, Indiana in wagons, with old bows
over them
and covered with canvas and were drawn by ox teams." It took seven weeks
to make the
trip. They had aimed at going to Paragon but "the people of the Zoar Church
talked the
family into staying there."
Francis Hedrick died "when Aunt Phoebe was a little girl. She was born
22 April 1345."
(Daughter of Jesse Hedrick and Elizabeth McCarn.) Elizabeth Howard "died
about a year
later." They are buried in Flower Gap Cemetery, Washington County, Indiana.
