AND GRANDPA MASSENGALE
written by Rod Park
Some of my fondest recollections as a child, are the times we children would
spend a few, precious weeks with our grandparents every summer. We never had
the pleasure of knowing our biological Grandmother, but Grandma Lena was the
next best thing to us.
Every morning we were greeted with a hearty farm breakfast, consisting of
eggs, pancakes, oatmeal, bacon, and sausage. Grandma also consented to share
her fresh honey, sorghum, cream, and butter. It was then time to help Grandpa
with his chores.
We boys loved to go bring in the cows to be milked, and were fascinated
with the vacuum system Grandpa had set up for milking purposes. Once in a while,
we would watch in delight as a certain belligerent cow would switch her tail
at just the right moment to knock Grandpa's hat off his head, into some fresh
manure on the barn floor.
We also liked to help Grandpa irrigate his fields. He used siphon tubes
to get the water from the ditch, over the dike, and into the furrows. It was
a bit of unexplainable magic to us. We also liked to ride with Grandpa on his
tractor. Quite often, he would have to consent to take us all so we would stop
arguing about who got to ride, and who didn't.
Grandpa was a good-natured soul, who loved to dance, sing, and tease. He was
also a wise man. He once told me: "Don't ever say anything you're sorry
for, and you'll never have to apologize." I'm sure he imparted many more
witticisms to me, but that is the one that seems to have stuck.
We used to love to play practical jokes on Grandpa, and for the most part, he
took it with just the right amounts of disapproval, and humor. On one such occasion
when Grandpa visited us, we pulled off a real classic, never to be matched by
anyone. First, we removed the wheels from his bed, and replaced them with bricks.
The next step was a rope, tied around the bricks, and run through a hole in
a nearby wall.
When Grandpa dozed off that evening, we pulled the bricks from under the bed,
and used squirt bottles to douse him through the hole in the wall. With the collapse
of the bed, the unexpected cold shower, and the added bonus of tumbling nearby
furniture, Grandpa was definitely taken by surprise!!
Even though he cussed us a little, he appreciated the forethought and planning
this stunt took. He really had trouble keeping the smile from his face, as he
stood there dripping, and told us why it was disrespectful to do such things.
He was married to Sadie May BROWNING on 3 Nov 1934.
