James Pollock Park, (son of Andrew) sailed from Scotland on 4 July 1820, aboard
the sailing vessel "Prompt". They Landed at the Port of Cornwall, on
the north side of the St. Lawrence River. (just west of Montreal)
Upon debarking the ship they were met by officials of the Canadian Government,
who offered them 100 acres of land for each family member, if they would settle
in Lanark County, Ontario. The new settlers were also given a bonus of ten pounds
sterling each by the Canadian government.
They accepted the offer of the Canadian government, and the government transported
them for the price of two pounds sterling per person.
After a two week journey, they arrived at Perth (about 75 miles north of Kingston)
on 15 September 1820. It was here that they began the struggle of cutting timber
to build houses, or dig dugouts in the ground with dirt roofs. The ground had
to be cleared by spring, so that it could be planted to crops.
Nearly all members of the family went without shoes in the summer. In the winter
they dressed in crudely home made articles of clothing, which were fashioned
out of canvas, or animal hide. They were obliged, winter and summer, to walk
into either Lanark or Perth to attend church, or to make purchases.
In 1844 a Mormon missionary (John Borrowman) converted James Pollock Park, along
with his Uncles John, William, and David to the LDS church.
James Pollock Park, and his Uncles John, William, and David left to join the
saints at Nauvoo on 10 Mar. 1846, They, along with others in their company, cut
a road through six miles of brush and timber. This was near the town of Alvinston,
Ontario.(east of Port Huron, Michigan) the road is now known as the Nauvoo road
by the Canadian government.
The Leader of their group was Archibald Gardner, the Journey was made with ox
teams, covered wagons, saddle horses, and by foot, driving their livestock all
the while. This group crossed into the United States in northern Michigan.
They arrived at Nauvoo, Illinois on 20 April 1846, but stayed only about a week.
From
Nauvoo, they traveled to Florence Nebraska, (winter quarters) arriving in October
1846.
On June 10 1847, they departed Nebraska with the John Taylor company, bound for
the distant Salt Lake Valley. They arrived in Salt Lake City 2 October 1847.
James Pollock Park moved shortly thereafter to Camp Floyd.(now known as
Fairfield, UT) Camp Floyd was were the government stationed troops to keep an
eye on the Mormons. As a matter of fact, James made a living building barracks
for the federal troops at Camp Floyd, as well as maintaining his own farm.
James passed away 30 December 1890, and was buried 3 January 1891, in the Fairfield
Cemetery.
