18. Josias Richard YOUNG was born on 10 Jun 1819 in St. Peter's Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands, England. He was baptized into the LDS church on 19 Mar 1850. He was endowed on 25 Jan 1869 in the Endowment House. He was buried in Jan 1892 in Fairfield, Utah, Utah. He died on 15 Jan 1892 in Fairfield, Utah, Utah. He was sealed to parents SUBMITTED. He has reference number 1BL2-9D. Josias and his family was converted by two missionaries, one of whom was named Dunbar.
They sailed for America in March 1855, aboard the ship "Chimborazo". They landed in May of the same year.
The Young family crossed the plains with the Milo Andrus company, and arrived in Provo, Utah in October of 1855. When Johnston's army came to Utah in 1859, Josias took a job with the army. He helped to build the barracks at Camp Floyd, (now Fairfield) for the U.S. soldiers. Josias and Elizabeth spent the rest of their lives in Fairfield.

A SKETCH OF JOSIAS RICHARD YOUNG AND ELIZABETH CANIVET

Lying between Continental Europe and the British Isles is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean known as the British Channel and the Channel Islands are located here, just off the coast of France. It is on these Islands that our Young family had its beginning at least, so far as we know at present.

To the family of John Young and Elizabeth Taylor (or Tarrie), was born on 10 June 1819, a son, christened Josias Richard Young. Their home was in St. Peter Port Guernsey.

Just 2 1/2 years later, on 17 November 1823, the family of Philip and Sarah Maurice Canivet were blessed by the birth of a daughter, Elizabeth Esther, in Grouville, Jersey, a French possession, while Guernsey belongs to England.

These small islands in the Channel group lie close together and the occupants must have visited bask and forth, and thus Josias met Elizabeth, and courtship and marriage ensued. The exact date of this marriage is not yet known; but it was about 1843, as their eldest child, a son was born 5 March 1844, named William John, a Utah Pioneer, who later went to Idaho where he died about 1903.

The second child, Elizabeth Jane, was born 13 June 1845, was also a Utah Pioneer. She married Andrew Coleman and lived in Tooele, Utah until she was advanced in years, then lived with a daughter, Mrs. Jas. Dunn of Salt Lake City, until her death, about 1939.

The third child, Susan Olivia, was born at St. Peter Port, Guernsey, 27 January 1847.

The fourth child, Louise Sarah, born II March 1849, also at St. Peter Port, Guernsey. She married Edward Butler. She lived and died at Burton, Idaho.

The second son and fifth child was born at St. Peter Port on February 13, 1851, where he died in infancy. He was christened Brigham Joseph and we conclude the parents must have heard about the Gospel at about that time.

Their sixth child, also a son, was born 27 June 1852 at St. Peter Port. He came to Utah with his parents later. He was named for his father, Josias Richard. He married Agnes Park. Died at Perry, Idaho at the age of 77 years.

The seventh child Andrew Henry, was born 15 May 1854. Died at Lehi, Utah about 1932.

About this time--I851-1854, an event transpired which changed the entire history of the Young family; the restored Gospel was brought to them by a pair of Mormon Elders, one of whom warn named Dunbar. The parents were baptized and soon the spirit of gathering to Zion worked on their hearts, as it did upon many another, and they forsook home and friends and native land to join the body of the church in Utah.

In March 1855, they sailed on the Chimborazo with a company of Saints and Elder. and landed in the New World in May of the same year. Then began the long trek westward, overland. They crossed the plains in the Mile Andrus Company with their six small children, the oldest but ten years of age and the youngest an infant of four months. Grandmother often told how one of the children learned to walk holding on the wagon wheels in camp.

We have all heard numerous stories of the hardships and sacrifices of that long trip across the plains. They well earned any honors we can offer. Let's never forget their noble example, their faith in the Gospel and the leadership of Brigham Young, prophet and colonizer.

Seven long months passed from the time the Youngs left Jersey, until they landed in Provo, Utah in October 1855, which was then only a village about six years old.

Less than two years later, on 18 January 1857, the Young's had another daughter named Mariah Helen. She married Roman Siepert. Died 17 July 1937.

Two years later, 31 January 1859, Charlotte Ann was born, tradition has it, in a 'dugout" on Provo bench. She married F. J. Busch, 1875 at Fairfield, Utah, moved to Perry, Idaho in May 1898, where she departed this life 23 December 1940.

Soon after Charlotte Ann's Birth, Johnston's Army came to Utah, and the Young. moved to Fairfield, Tooele, Company, where Josias, being a carpenter, found a very good job building barracks at Camp Floyd for the U. S. soldiers. Here the Youngs built their family home where they lived to an advanced age. Here, too, was born to them Eliza Alice, their tenth child on 22 November 1860. She married John Clements and died at Sandy, Utah.

A daughter, Annie, was born 23 March 1863. She married Andrew Park. They moved to Perry, Idaho where she died during the flu epidemic of 1919.

Fredrick Gilbert, twelfth child of the lounge, was born 22 September 1865.

The thirteenth child and sixth son, George Irwin, was born 20 January 1868.

As the Young family grew and married several moved to Idaho.

Josias died of dropsy in 1892, at Fairfield, Utah. Elizabeth lived there until she became feeble, then went to live with Charlotte Ann at Perry, Idaho, where she died 15 March 1912, at the age of 89 years. She was known for her cheerful spirit and her love of music. She loved a good story, and could tell many.
