Under the provisions of the Historic Sites Act of August  21, 1935, this site possesses exceptional value in commemorating and illustrating the history of the United States. Open daily since it was built in commemoration of the Bicentennial in 1935. Contains varied collections of local memorabilia. Items of interest include: prehistoric and historic Indian relics, old documents and Spanish land grants, weapons collection, artifacts from Missouri's first industry, the Saline Creek Salt Works. Scale model of the Mississippi River Railroad Transfer Boat "The Ste. Genevieve." Admission charge.

 

 

 

 

 

 
Church of Ste. Genevieve

The town's first church was built about 1753 directly on the banks of the Mississippi River. It was later moved to higher ground in 1753 due to repeated flooding. This log church was replaced by a stone building about 40 years later. The present Victorian Gothic brick church was constructed in 1876. Foundations of the log and stone churches are still visible in the basement of the brick church. Several prominent citizens are buried beneath the nave of the structure, including Commandant Francois Valle II and his wife and several of the church's early pastors.

The World Bird Sanctuary's mission is to preserve the earth's biological diversity and secure the future of threatened bird species in their natural environments. This mission is being fulfilled through education, rehabilitation and propagation. The Ste.  Genevieve location features: birds of prey, parrots, numerous insects, reptiles including a rare albino python, and many interesting things to see, do and touch. Naturalists are on hand to answer questions. Souvenirs are available for purchase with proceeds from sales going toward the management of animals. No admission charge.

Offers 50 campsites, including 17 with electrical hookups. Campsites available on first-come, first-serve basis with maximum continuous stay of 15 days. Nominal fee is charged. Camping area includes modern restrooms, hot showers, laundry facilities, dumping station, and playground equipment. Water is turned off in the campground from Nov. 1 until Apr. 1. Visitors can picnic at numerous sites. The park's open shelter can be reserved by contacting park superintendent in advance. Hikers and backpackers can explore the park's natural features on Whispering Pine Trail or Pickle Creek Trail. Trail brochures available at park office.
