SPALDING, Mary Ann - line 43.
Household of Sidney Stevens.

National Archives of Canada, Microfilm C-1076.

Line 43, Mary Ann Spalding, occupation: [illegible "Hugent?"].
born in Canada, religion Christian, age 30.”
Mary Ann lived in the household and log home of Sidney Stevens.

Note: Sidney Stevens' household included his unmarried sister
"Feebe" (Phoebe) who later married Josiah Broad's brother
Charles Broad. Also, Sidney Stevens later married Josiah Broad's
sister Rachel Broad. Therefore, Sidney Stevens’ household in 1861
included three future spouses of the Broad siblings. It is possible that
Josiah met his future wife through the Stevens family, but was Mary Ann
only working for or was she related to the Stevens family?

Census Land Records available for 1861:
Follow-up! The 1861 agricultural census for Victoria County is found at
the end of the county, but pages might be out of order (in which case, it might
be necessary to have to search through the whole agricultural census of
each county).

BROAD, Josiah and Mary Ann (SPALDING).
Not found. Why?

I tried the online 1881 searchable index, looking for any one of the three:
BROAD, Josiah or Mary Ann or Eliza Jane. No right individuals found.
Were they moving at the time of the census? Travelling?
In the United States, England, outside the populous areas of Canada?
And where were they in 1891?

Or perhaps this family was missed by either the transcriber of the 1881 census
or by the enumerators themselves at the time.
But notice that the family cannot be found in 1891 either. Explanation?

KIRBY, George and Mary [VIPOND]
NOT YET FOUND.
cmp writes that Mary and George Kirby should already be married
with at least two children in the 1881 census. Not yet found.
Location different? Misspelling? Not in Ontario?

UNVERIFIED SOURCE: ONLINE FAMILY TREE

One online family tree included information about Charlotte Walter and
Josiah Broad. However, please do not copy the following information
since it has not been verified and did not include source notes:

Charlotte Walter, female, born in 1841 in Bradworthy, Devon, England;
baptized Oct. 31, 1841, in Bradworthy, Devon, England;
died in 1924 in Manila [sic], Ontario, Canada.
Compiler wrote that Charlotte’s parents were Charles Walter
(born Sept.30 ,1787 in Blatchborough, Devon, England)
and Mary Cann (born 1818 in Bradworthy, Devon, England).
On the website it states that Charlotte married a Thomas Broad
[second marriage?], later Josiah Broad in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada,
and was the mother to Eliza Broad [probably an error].
I am very interested in knowing what sources were used for this tree.

However, Note: In the Ontario "Vital Statistics Index" for 1924, there is only one
"Charlott Broad" – is this Josiah's widow or a different Charlotte Broad?:
"Broad,Charlott – Scarborough – 09.21.24 [died September 21, 1924] –
Reference No. 036435 / 24."

[Look up] There are other “Charlotte Broad” individuals in Ontario at that time,
so there is need for caution. For example, there is a Charlotte Broad,
wife of William Henry Broad.
