What is The "church of Christ?"

The word "church" means the "called out ones." The church is composed of those who have been "called out" of the world by the gospel unto Christ, (2 Thes. 2:14). Thus, these "called out ones" are simply Christians trying to be just what the followers of Christ were in New Testament times (1Thes. 1:5-6).

In New Testament times, each local congregation of God's people was a church of Christ. For example, there was a church of Christ at Philippi, a church of Christ at Corinth, a church of Christ at Jerusalem, etc. (Phil. 1:1; 1 Cor. 1:2; Acts 8:1; Romans 16:16).
