Dave's Depot

In the months ahead, I hope you'll drop in often as I assemble my model railroad. As a result of a recent job change and relocation, I was forced to tear down my fledgling layout, benchwork and all and transport it to our new location. Not an easy task, but well worth it, because in its next incarnation it will be able to expand greatly in size... it was formerly housed in a small L-shaped bedroom, but will now have a building of its own, approximately 20'x30'... Cheryl is despondent at the potential drain on financial resources and quality time together, but I'm sure we'll work it out!

My Railroading Goals
Several years ago, the interest in model railroading that I had as a teenager began to reassert itself for a couple of reasons. For one thing, ballooning (my other hobby) is highly impractical in the Midwest through the winter months! But more importantly, my job with a public utility gave me many opportunities to watch railroads in action, and I decided to use some of what I was seeing on-the job as the foundation for a layout. Don't get the connection between electric utilities and railroading? Well, we'll get to that soon! Meanwhile, please be patient as we develop both the depot and these pages!

The railroad itself is in HO scale. Its theme is the utility industry of about fifty years ago, in the days of the old manufactured gas plants and some of the vintage coal-fired electric power plants. The layout is a blend of both kitbuilt and kitbashed structures, which we'll feature in the months ahead. Rather than giving you all the "history lessons" in one lump, we'll be setting the scene historically as we discuss each of the features in the layout, and accompanying the discussion with photos of the work-in-progress. Hope you'll find something of interest, and that you'll stay with us as we move along the line!.
