Terry's 3M's

Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

What do you eat or drink while reading (even if you put the book down to actually eat)?

Before I had a family to feed, I often ate in a style that was complementary to the book I was reading. For instance, while reading or rereading The Godfather, I would make Italian sausage sandwiches for my meals. While rereading Gone With the Wind, I would make a supper out of a large baked yam.

I couldn't afford Perry Mason's regular dinner of a T-bone steak, baked potato with sour cream, and a Bacardi cocktail. Although I did try the Bacardi cocktail (Bacardi, sweet and sour mix and grenadine). Too sweet for me.

Now, I just switch to tea if I'm reading books set in the British Isles. Since I was just reading another Hamish Macbeth mystery tonight, I'm drinking tea instead of the usual coffee or diet Pepsi.

That's a lot easier than trying to figure out who will eat what and who will refuse to even try something new.

But, every now and then, the urge to cook Italian when reading a book set in Italy, or kielbasa, golumki or pierogi when reading about a Polish family or a book set in Poland overwhelms me--or maybe it's just because those things are my soul foods.
