Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

May 24, 1998

I could have gone to Wet'nWild today. But, this has been the coolest May in Las Vegas that I can remember. It even gets cool enough at night to sleep under covers. Not that I mind...I love this weather.

Last May, by this time, all the kids were wearing shorts to school and it was very hot during the day. In the 90's.

But, my blood has thinned a bit since I've been living in Vegas for 20 years (in August). Even though the temperature is in the high 70's/low 80's, it is still too chilly out for me to go swimming.

Although, I'm not sure swimming is the right word for what I usually do at the water park. I usually spend all my time in the Lazy River. The Lazy River goes around the center of the park. I'm not sure how long it is exactly, but, it takes about 7 minutes to walk around it while going with the current. At the deepest points in this trench, the water is about 3 and a half feet deep. There are water jets that make water currents. The current isn't fast, but, it is strong. You can get a good workout by trying to walk against the current.

The last time I went there was in September, I think. It was still hot outside, but, I was quite cold when I got out of the water. There's a breeze outside which means that I would really be chilly today.

Yesterday, I wrote about things that exist today...but, did not exist 4 and a half years ago.

Well, today I saw and advertisement for something that I don't ever recall seeing before.

There is nothing unusal about a sectional sofa with reclining seats and a sofa/hide=a=bed anymore. Not even with the recliners having cup holders and massage. This one had heat massage. There's nothing unusual about having a phone in the recliner arm anymore. But, this one is a speakerphone. But, the part that I had never seen advertised before is that this sofa has a PC port for laptops!

I used to have a hard time describing my relationship with my nieces and nephew. I am much more than an aunt to them. Sometimes they call me Mama, sometimes they call me Auntie, and since he started watching tapes of the TV series, Dinosaurs almost 3 years ago, Bryan calls me DaMama a lot of the time.

I am the one that gets the kids up for school; orders them to change clothes because "those are play clothes...not school clothes"; cooks their meals; supervises their chores; plays tickle torture with them; tells them when it's bathtime; and sends them to bed at night. They watch TV at my discretion and in my bedroom. I write the excuses when they've been absent from school and I sign homework/reading logs.

While reading some of the things at the Twin Oaks site a while back. I came across a term that fits what I do to a tee. Co-parent. I love that term!

While my sister loves her kids; she has never really been a hands on parent. She's always been the breadwinner. She has always been more like a father than a mother to her kids.

Delton supervises and helps with homework. And together, he and I set the rules, bed times, and discipline of the kids.

Co-parent. That's what I am to my nieces and nephew.
