Terry's 3M's: Meditations, Mutterings, Madness

Terry's 3M's

May 28, 1998

I've been doing a little reading lately.

I finished Stephen King's The Dead Zone. Not all of Stephen King's works can be classified as horror. I was planning on classifying this book as sci-fi. But, I'm not sure that I can. I guess that I'll put it under horror, but, it is no more horror than the X-Files.

Is there a classification for fiction that is about the paranormal, but, is not necessarily horror? Is the movie with Christopher Walken classified as horror?

If there is anything that is horror in this novel, it is not Johnny Smith. It is the actions of a rapist/murderer. And the manner of his demise once that Johnny knew who he was.

With the USA watching Dionne Warwick and other celebrities on the Psychic Friends Network infomercials and talk show hosts booking psychics as guests, it is hard for me to see this book as horror.

The other book that I read was Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. It is classic sci-fi. And because Faye just walked in the door, I will save my observations about this for another time. [Besides, I'm supposed to be cooking dinner. ;->]

Sci-fi is a genre that I have woefully neglected. So is fantasy fiction. I plan on doing some catching up in that area.

I didn't start this entry sooner because I just started reading Fahrenheit 451 this morning. It's an easy read. But, the subject matter is intriguing and leaves one with food for thought.
