Jun 13,1833 - | John Wilson shot and killed Robert Lyon in Perth, Ontario, in the last duel fought in Canada. In June of 1834 he was acquitted and he moved to London from Toronto where he took on a law practice. He and Elizabeth Hughes, who the duel was over, were married in 1835. |
Jun 18,1841 - | Act of Divorce was passed. John Stuart married Elizabeth VanRensalaer (dau. of Dr. Grant Powell) in 1834. The couple moved from Toronto to London and had 3 daughters in their first 5 years of wedded bliss. However, Elizabeth soon fell in love with British lieutenant John Grogan. Stuart, who had entered into law practice, upon finding out about his wife's infidelity, petitioned the Canadian government. |

1867-68 - | "Slippery Jack" ran a spree of break-ins, apparently as a bet that he could break into at least 1 home per week for the period of one year in London and escape being arrested. He started by breaking into the homes during the night and stacking and rearranging the furniture. The more break-ins he performed successfully the braver he got graduating to yelling into the sleeping tennants ears and finally to the point where he'd tickle their feet to wake them. "Jack" was prepared to pay his "victims" for any damages he did from his winnings of the bet |

May 30,1897 - | a shootout in a popular Canadian northwest bluff ended an epic 2 year manhunt following the killing of a mountie |
May 22,1898 - (Monday) | 69 motormen and conductors went on strike in London. When scabs were brought in to run the streetcars, violence increased and streetcars were kicked and damaged. The violence peaked on Saturday July 8 when workers from other areas were brought into the city to join the protest with thousands of rioters on the downtown streets. At midnight the military were brought in and the riot act was read (for the first and only time in London's history). The strike ended with the Union losing |
