  • JASON Project - Dr. Robert D. Ballard founded the JASON Project in 1989, after receiving thousands of letters from children wanting to know how he discovered the RMS Titanic. Each year, a two-week scientific expedition is mounted in a remote part of the world and broadcast in real-time, using state-of-the-art technology.

This site is an on-line biology lab and lesson plan, where tele-students can read about a topic and then participate in scientific experiments.
  • Oceanography from the Space Shuttle - Beautiful photographs and descriptions of the Earth's oceans, islands, and coastlines. This is a Web version of the 1989 publication Oceanography from the Space Shuttle produced by NASA in cooperation with the Office of Naval Research and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
  • Seaweed! - This site is a fairly technical exploration of Seaweed...if you have any questions about this organism this is the place to find yourself.
  • Studying Ocean Color From Space - Includes topics such as phytoplankton, ocean chemistry, and the role of carbon dioxide. This is intended to be a teacher's guide, but is equally interesting to students. From SEAWIFS, NASA's global ocean colour monitoring mission.
  • Shoals Marine Laboratory, run by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire, offers summer courses for high school students. For example, the most recent course, Oceanography of the Gulf of Maine, offered a unique opportunity for students to experience life on board a sailing vessel and on an island off the coast of New Hampshire, studying oceanic and coastal marine environments.
  • Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network - The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) is an organization dedicated to the study and conservation of marine mammals. One of the things they focus on is handling stranded (beached) animals.
  • USGS Water Resources - A great resource for real-time and historical data on water resources in the United States. This site has a great deal of primary information that can be used by teachers and students in the classroom for analysis.   • Hawaiian Volcano Observatory - USGS website monitoring the Hawaiian volcanoes! Lots of pictures and historical information about eruptions. A very neat and easy site to navigate.
  • NASA Volcanology Team - Information about the project activities of the NASA Earth Observing System Interdisciplinary Science Investigation Volcanology Team. EOS is a series of polar-orbiting remote-sensing satellites planned for launch starting in 1998 and spanning a period of at least 15 years.
  • Paleontological Research Institution - This museum has an enormous fossil collection. Their online exhibits take you on a tour of the fossils, and also include other earth science resources. In Ithaca, NY.

  • Smithsonian Gem & Mineral Collection - This is a collection of photographs of gems and minerals, with a small amount of text about each. The images are very beautiful.
  • Virtual Earthquake - An interactive web site designed to introduce you to the concepts of how an earthquake epicenter is located and how the Richter Magnitude of an earthquake is determined.
  • VolcanoWorld - This volcano site is geared to students, and includes topics such as Volcanoes of the World, Ask a Volcanologist, Volcano History, and more.

  • Gateway to Canadian Geography - This site contains information about Canada's landscape and natural wonders. Visitors can view maps or create their own.   • Images from Space - Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) is a joint U.S.-German-Italian project that uses a highly sophisticated imaging radar to capture images of Earth that are useful to scientists across a great range of disciplines. Check out NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab for more interesting Earth photographs.
  • Mining Co. Geography Site - Lots of info on all types of geography science, it will take some time to explore!
  • Odden's Bookmarks - A fantastic site for maps, cartography and GIS data covering the entire world. You can find many thousands of thematic maps for sites all over the planet. Huge site with tons of information.
  • National Geographic Educational Pages - The education page of National Geographic what else is there to say?! This site contains, maps, classroom ideas, resources and a Faculty Forum. There is also information about receiving grants from National Geographic for interesting geography curricula.
  • Vegetation Satellite Imagery - Vegetation Condition images based on NDVI (Normalized DifferenceVegetation Index) are available for viewing at this site. The NDVI measures vegetation vigor caused by chlorophyll activity; this is sometimes called "greenness". There are great images here showing the effects of the massive Midwest flood in 1993, the early freeze in 1995, the serious drought in 1996 winter wheat areas, and the late 1996 planting in the eastern corn belt.

  • Academy Curricular Exhange. Columbia Education Center. An archive of lesson plans grouped by subject matter and grade level. The topic science is divided into Elementary School (K-5), Intermediate School (6-8) and High School (9-12).
  • Access Excellence Activities Exchange. A site with a large number of lesson plans and activities for high school curricula. The emphasis is on cellular biology, but some of the plans deal with ecology and natural history.
  • Activity Search. Houghton Mifflin. A searchable database of over 400 original classroom activities and lesson plans. Grades K-8.
  • AIMS Education Foundation. This web site has a collection of teacher resources, puzzles and activities for kids, a magazine, workshops, and other materials for both students and teachers.
  • Animal Tracks On-Line. National Wildlife Federation. A collection of lesson plans covering the environment, habitats, air, water, and endangered species.

  • Education Place Activity Search. Houghton Mifflin. An archive of lesson plans and classroom activities, mostly in the K-6 grade levels. You can search by grade level and by subject (science in this case).
  • Encarta Online Lesson Collection. Microsoft. Encarta Lesson Collection is a large archive of lesson plans arranged by subject. You can also do a key word search. Each article also has links to Encarta related subjects for additional information.
  • Explorer. Explorer [number 1] is a large collection of different types of educational resources including activities, and educational software. The material is usually available in the form of downloadable files in a variety of formats.
  • Exploring the Environment. ETE is an experimental program to introduce students to the environment and ecological problems. The program revolves around a series of modules containing both explanatory material and a series of activities and problem solving exercises. The site is divided into sections for students and for teachers. Some of the modules are on hurricanes, temperate rainforests, volcanoes, mountain gorillas to name a few.
  • Explorer. The Explorer [number 2] is a collection of educational resources (instructional software, lab activities, lesson plans, student created materials) for K-12 mathematics and science education. These resources are arranged in a hierarchy of subject matter. The files are usually either in text form or Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files. Each lesson plan is categorized by grade level.
  • Florida Geographic Alliance Lesson Plans. Although most of these lesson plans are on geography, some plans on ecosystems and geology may also be found here.
  • Going to a Museum?. Lesson plans centered around the theme of a field trip to a museum, zoo, or other educational location.
  •   Helping Your Child Learn Science. U.S. Department of Education. This site has a series of activities and experiments you can use to illustrate various basic principles of science. The activities are intended for home use, but many apply to the school environment as well. Grade level K-6.

  • Lesson Plans Page. A compendium of lesson plans categorized by subject. The site comes in Java and non-Java versions and allows you to do keyword searches.
  • LETSNet. Michigan State University College of Education. A series lesson plans on ecology, weather, the environment, and dinosaurs.
  • Marc Sheehan's Lesson Plans Page. This site has some lesson plans, but is strongest in links to other sites on the webs with general and specific lesson plans.
  • Microscopes, Cells, DNA, and You. Center for Molecular Biotechnology Outreach Program. A series of related lesson plans specializing on molecular and cellular biology suitable for early grade levels.
  • Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. A large collection of lesson plans on what students might learn and find at a wildlife refuge.
  • Minnetonka Public Schools Elementary Science Center. A large collection of lesson plans in science. Some of the lesson plans are local and some are links to other sites. Grades K-5.
  • National Science Teachers Association. The NSTA has a wonderful collection of curricular resources arranged by grade level, subject, and searchable by keyword. Many of the resources require an Adobe Acrobat Reader (pdf) to view.
  • New Jersey Networking Infrastructure Project. This site has a number of projects and lesson plans for students that emphasis the use of real time data from the internet to solve a variety of scientific problems. The activities are divided grades 3-6, 6-8 and 9-12.
  • Newton's Apple. This web site is a compendium of lesson plans based on the PBS program. The list of lesson plans is very extensive and covers most of the sciences. To find a specific topic, visit the alphabetical list.
  • Paso Partners - Integrating Mathematics, Science, and Language. A number of lesson plans in both English and Spanish in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format.

  • Science Resource Center. Patrick Gormley. A center for teachers to exchange their educational resources. The site is currently strongest in chemistry.
  • Science with OAR. Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. A great educational tool dealing with a number of topics including El Niño, storms, the atmosphere, fisheries, the Great Lakes, and oceans. You'll find introductions to each topic for the students, a series of activities, and teachers' guides for each of the subjects.
  • Scope, Sequence, and Coordination. National Science Teachers Association. A truly great collection of "micro units" on various topics in the sciences. The lesson plans and activities are particularly complete. The units are divided into teacher and student components and may be previewed as Adobe Acrobat documents or downloaded to print.
  • Smithsonian Education. Lesson Plans. Lesson plans from the Smithsonian including a number in the biological sciences.
  • Southeastern Michigan Math-Science Learning Coalition. This web site has a wonderful collection of lesson plans and other activities arranged by subject matter and grade level.

  • Waterford Press. We really love this web site. The Waterford Press has a wealth of materials you can download for both the classroom and for fun at home. A section of games has mazes, origami, shadow identifications, animals tracks, and much more. Among the materials for teachers are a number of activities on plants, animals, weather, and geology. There are also a series of very illustrated quizzes for students to take.
  • World Builders. Elizabeth Anne Viau. A truly great web site. The basic concept is that students build their own world and in the process learn central information from all of the sciences with particular information on the biological sciences. The course is arranged in a series of lessons. For each lesson activities are laid out and supporting web sites listed. Among the many virtues of this web site are games, activities, a section on biomes, and examples of planets constructed by other school classes.
  • Yale-New Have Teachers Institute. This institute has a wealth of curricular resources in both the humanities and sciences. Many of these resources are adapatable as activities and lesson plans in ecology and environmental sciences.
