Project Description
Project name: Watershed Nature Center Meditation Area Bridge and
Cleanup
Describe the project you
plan to do.
The
Watershed Nature Center has an area that they call the Meditation area that is
in need of repair. The bridge that was built years ago is falling down and has
no railing on it. There is an old car frame lying in the weeds that needs to be
gotten rid of, and the creek bank is washing out on the one side of the bank.
There are also a lot of invasive plants that don’t belong in this area.
I
plan to tear down the old bridge and haul away all of the old lumber and nails.
Then I am planning on building a new 16-foot long, 4ft wide arch bridge in its
place with handrails so that it is safe. I also plan to build an 8-foot wall on
the bank and backfill it with rock near the bridge so that the dirt doesn’t
wash away any more.
I
am also going to cut up the old car frame with a gas powered chop saw and haul
it away to the scrap yard.
What group will benefit from
the project?

My project will be of
benefit to the group because:
The
Watershed Nature Center is a nature preserve in Edwardsville that restores and
maintains habitats typical of Southern Illinois. They also provide nature paths
for people to walk on. They also provide educational experiences for children
and adults. The Nature Center is mostly run by volunteers.
I
have been going to the Watershed Nature Center since I was a small child with
the Cub Scouts and also with school. When we went there they always walked us
around to show us the plants and animals that are there. The meditation area is
a place where they like to take people and teach them about nature. Right now
the place isn’t useable because of the bridge being unsafe and all the weeds
that are growing around everything. And of course the car frame isn’t a part
of nature.
When
my project is complete the bridge and the surrounding area will be safe and the
area will be able to be used for teaching about nature.

Project
Details
Plan
your work by describing the present condition, the method, materials to be used,
project helpers, and
a time schedule for carrying out the project, the estimated cost of the project,
and how the needed funds will
be obtained. Describe any safety hazards you might face, and explain how you
will ensure the safety of those carrying out the project.
If
appropriate, include photographs of the area before you begin your project.
Providing before-and-after photographs of your project area can give a clear
example of your effort.
Right now the area has a bridge that is falling down and isn’t safe to use. There is an old car frame that needs to be removed. The creek bed is being washed out and needs to be reinforced and the area needs to have all it’s invasive plants removed and the paths need to be covered with mulch.
Method
For my project I plan to tear down the old bridge and haul away all of the old lumber and nails. Then I am planning on building a new 16-foot long 4-foot high arch bridge in its place with handrails so that it is safe. I also plan to build a 8-foot wall on the bank and backfill it with rock near the bridge so that the dirt doesn’t wash away any more.
I am also going to cut up the old car frame with a gas powered chop saw and haul it away to the scrap yard.
After the car is gone and the bridge is built I am going to spend a day pulling invasive plants and spreading some mulch on the path on each side of the bridge to make sure the area looks good.
All lumber will be from a lumber farm and not a natural forest.

How
Funds will be acquired
I have talked to my Aunts, Uncles and Grandparents and the one’s that can’t be there to help have offered to help me pay for the project. It is a good way to get people involve that can’t be there to help.
Safety
I plan to have a safety huddle before we start the project every time to
discuss the following
An adult will operate all power tools
Safety glasses-keep dust out of eyes
Gloves-to protect hands from splinters and sharp edges
Earplugs-when power tools are being used
Bad footing in the area-area is slippery, watch your step
Plenty of water if it is hot-watch for signs of overheating-dizzieness,
nausea, thirsts
Working from high places. The bridge will be
about 4 feet high-adults only on bridge until
complete
Proper technique for lifting-lift with your legs not your back
2-nylon slings
1-line level
1-bucket
Scrap lumber for leveling post
Water
Gloves
Earplugs
Camera
I plan on getting all the adults and scouts in troop 19 to help me. I have also talked to my Uncles and Aunts and some of my friends who said that they would be happy to help or donate money to help me with my project.
