In the context of the Internet, spam is slang for unsolicited email, which
is about the same as junk mail. Spammers(people who send spam) use
programs (I'll call it a scanner) to try to find email address on the
Internet so that they can send them spam (You don't need to worry about
other people reading your email unless you email a public place such as a
mailing list or usenet group). My signature is setup to try to fool them.
First, my email address is split in half over two lines to make it hard for
a scanner program to read. Second, I include a fake email
address(uce@ftc.gov) for the scanner program to read. That email is
actually an account setup by the government to which they have requested
that people send spam so that they can study the problem. Basically the
scanner program is going to find an email address that wants spam. :-) I
identify that address as a location to send spam so that people know that
it isn't my email adddress.
