Things I have learned
- Comparing (6/15/2003 by James)
To compare is to bring the thing being compared down close to the level of the think to which you are comparing it.
Anything of truely great value can't really be compared. Comparing God's love to anything may help us understand it be does devalue it. Saying God's love is like the ocean makes it seem small when compared to the universe. Even comparing it to the universe makes it seem smaller than it is. Comparing your wife to anyone else (even when she comes out much better) devalues her. The only exception that I can think of is an off-the-cuff, unintended, thankful comparison. i.e. When you see some other wife do something bad and you tell your wife how thankful you are to her for how wonderful she is.
I would be interested in any comments that you have.
