Poetry is language used in a special way. Its words form patterns of verse, of sound and of thought that appeal strongly to the imagination.
Poets write in either bound verse or free verse. Bound verse is based on a metrical pattern while free verse is not.
Lyric poems are usually short and many have a songlike quality. The poet expresses his personal reactions to things - what he sees, hears, thinks and feels.
Narrative poems tell a story and are usually rather long. The poet suggests the setting, characters and events and gives them meaning. Epics and ballads are among the foremost kinds of narrative poetry.
Dramatic poems resemble narrative poems because they tell a story and are fairly long. But the poet tells the story through the speech of one or more of the characters in the story.
In the coming weeks we will bring you poems from some of our greatest poets.
