Sexing your Hamster
Female or Male?
Many people say males are tamer than female hamsters, but that is not true.
They will both act the same if you treat them with
love and affection. However, females are larger on average than males. Also males are more dominant than females, and so shouldn't be kept together.
Many people think that their baby hamsters have an unusual "growth" just under their tail, but this is usually just the "manly" parts of a growing boy hamster. See the picture below (sorry it's blurry!).
The sex of hamsters can be easily determined. Mature male hamsters possess large, prominent testicles, which often alarm owners who first notice their size and mistake them for tumors, as described above. In addition, the genitourinary to anal separation is much wider in males than females, making it possible to sex young hamsters.
