Early Generations

1. The Whalans

The Whalans were an important and widespread pioneering family in New South Wales, notably the MacDonald River area, the Clarence River region and around Oberon. Related by marriage to the family of Governor Lachlan Macquarie.

James Whalan (1735…1789), son of engineer JAMES WHALAN and ELIZA MERRILL, married Mabel Bordeaux (…1781); their children seem to have included:

1.1 James Whalan (…c1825) m. Ann Willgrass

James Whalan, seemingly son of JAMES WHALAN and his wife MABEL BORDEAUX, came to Australia as a free emigrant, arriving in Sydney aboard the 407 ton 10 gun Minorca on 14 December 1801, mastered by John Leith on her maiden voyage. James probably came to the Colony at the behest of Charles Whalan, possibly his younger brother, who had arrived as a convict on 17 October 1791. James married Ann Willigrass at St Phillip’s CoE, Kent Street, Sydney on 27 July 1810. Ann was the daughter of GEORGE WILLIGRASS and his wife JUDITH HAMMOND (married 18 October 1779 at Blofield NFK). Ann, with her sister Judith Willigrass and their mother, had been transported to the Colony, arriving in Sydney on 18 August 1809.

James and Ann produced four children:

Caught poaching trout when about fourteen years old, Charles was sentenced at Westminster on 5 July 1787 to seven years transportation. As Charles Wayland he was eventually transported and arrived in New South Wales on 13 October 1791 aboard the Albemarle, ex Portsmouth under George Bowen. The well educated Charles joined the New South Wales Corps on 11 February 1793 and became Sergeant of the Governor’s Bodyguard of Light Horse serving Governors Philip Gidley King and Lachlan Macquarie, remaining as such until his retirement on the departure of Macquarie on 11 February 1822 aboard the Surrey under Thomas Raine.

Charles married Elizabeth Berry, daughter born in 1781 at Stevenage, Hertfordshire of THEODIUS BERRY and MARY GRANT. Melissa Smith wrote (pers comm 27 January 2004) that Elizabeth Berry's parents were JOHN BERRY and SARAH WARNER. Melissa also noted that she is "… not aware that there is any proof that Charles and James were brothers, or who their parents were or where they were born".
