A FAMILY'S BEST FRIEND
Sir Thomas Douglas, Earl of Selkirk
The AKC registered name of my 4 year-old, Scottish Terrier. There actually was a person of this name, that I had found in the encyclopedia. He helped the Scottish people during the European famine; that would be during the potato blight that destroyed many farms and farmers lives in the United Kingdom.
Back to my dog.....to the family he is known as "Ben"; short for Bennigan - after the restaurant - I KNOW! It's Irish! :D He became part of our family in October 1993, while I was pregnant with my second daughter. He is brindle in color, with lively brown eyes, and a patient and tolerant temperament around children. Ben guards our orchard from hopping, tunnel-digging, and ground scurrying rodents; no mice in my house....nor rabbits in the orchard.....and the moles stay below ground in fear of the "Black Beast"! Coyotes, common to our area, but rarely seen in town, stay clear of our property. One misdirected coyote came into the orchard and Ben, I think, scared the poor thing more than anything!
Ben has been a faithful and reliable dog. One time, I have found a 2 year-old child, who had wandered into my yard, playing gleefully with him. He was the first dog I ever purchased. Normally, I go to animal shelters to get my canine buddies. He has been worth every penny too!
