Whatever Happened to Sin

What I'm about to say has nothing to do with politics. It has no favoritism toward or against any political party or any politicians, elected or not. What I am going to say has everything to do with sin and what is right and wrong.

To the glee and delight of some and the shock and horror of others, Our President went on national television Monday, August 17, 1998, and delivered a speech that Martin Kasindorf and Gray Fields of USA Today called "clearly a document [speech] written by lawyers" (USA Today, August 19, 1998 p.3A).

Although I am deeply troubled that the most powerful man in the world is deep in a sex scandal and that the second most powerful man in the world, the Russia President, is a drunk, it's the wording of that Monday night speech that troubles me the most. Carefully chosen words to soften or hid the truth send a very mixed signal to our children and indeed the world. It is now politically correct to call a lie "misled" and adultery an "inappropriate relationship." But! The term that we all too often hear is "bad or poor judgment." That drives me up the wall! What ever happened to real confession were a person said, "I did wrong - I sinned?"

Are we raising a society that thinks that it is no longer sin if we can word in correctly? Perhaps the next defense for a thief will be "Your Honor he "appropriated" the car." Again, I ask the question, whatever happened to sin?

God help us! Those of us who believe the Word, those of us who are raising children, those of us who are teaching -- have a greater task before us. We must now convince the upcoming generations that "inappropriate relationships" and "misleading people" and "bad judgment" is sin -- that sin is sin, no matter how we word it!

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! --Isaiah 5:20
