Max is a 10 1/2 year old Norwegian Elkhound.
This picture was taken the day after we brought Max home, October 1993. We had gone to an Elkhound Specialty show in New Jersey to get a good look at the Elkhound breed and met a breeder there who had two male puppies. Max came home with us.
As you would expect, Max loves the snow and never seems to get enough. The deeper the better. I almost have to drag him back into the house. The cold never seems to bother him.
Max on the lookout for rabbits and squirrels. He loves to chase them but once they are out of his yard he will stop. Although the elkhound has a reputation for running if not kept in a fenced area, Max is very good about staying in his own yard and rarely ventures outside of it. He does have a 3 acre yard though.
06/05/01 - Max is almost a year older now and is doing well. His health is good. We are trying to keep his weight below 58 lbs. but he is less active now and it is a struggle. We both could use a little more exercise. Max ran into a large groundhog the other day and tried to intimidate him as he would another dog without biting. The groundhog was not impressed and Max will carry a couple of scars as a result. He was lucky that he did not get hurt worse. I am hoping that we do not see that groundhog again or that I see it first. It will be the last time.
01/28/04 - Max is getting older now and is pretty doing well. He has had some health problems in the last year. His weight had gone up to about 66 lbs last winter. He is now down to 56. In May we found that he had some blood in his urine that turned out to be a couple of bladder stones. We had the operation and the vet removed two calcium oxalate stones. They were irregular in shape and with pointed edges, flattened about 10mm in size. The vet had some trouble removing them. The 8 inch incision healed nicely and all the fur has now grown back. Watching his diet and trying to make sure he drinks more and gets more activity each day. Hopefully we will not have to go through this again but you never know and he is going to get X-rays done next month to check for any more. We also found that Max has severe hip displasia. He has almost no hip sockets at all. But you would never know it the way he gets around, jumping up on his bench and chasing after rabbits. I am hoping that it does not become a problem and am trying to make sure his weight stays down and he gets more exercise.
For more information on Norwegian Elkhounds you can take a look at the above website. Also, the following magazines have had articles on the Elkhound in the past couple of years. I have a link below to Browntrout Calendars. They have a 16 month calendar available with Elkhounds pictured. I have had their calendars in the past and they are usually very nice. They offer a large selection of dog breeds and other themes also. If you have any questions about the Norwegian Elkhound, I would be happy to answer any E-mails.
