I will not go quietly into the night,
I will not vanish without a fight.
I will live on and I will survive!

Welcome to my Police Page

I am the Man.
I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
Done what you fear to do.
All these things I have done for you.
I am the Man you lean upon,
The Man you cast your scorn upon.
The Man you bring your troubles to,
All these Men I've been for you.
The Man you call, the Man In Blue,
Is just a man, a man like you.
And through the years I've come to see
I cannot be all you ask of me.
So take this badge, and take this gun.
Will you take it? Will Anyone?
And when you watch a person die,
When you hear a battered baby cry,
Then do you think that you can be
All these things you ask of me?

I am Garrett Smit, 25 years old, husband to Sarianne and father to Qiana Nöel who is 5 1/2 years old and Storey Theresa who was born Feb 6th 1998 (her age changes so fast, so you can do the math yourself and figure out how old she is when you’re reading this!)

I attended the Utah POST in the summer of 1994, and was hired soon after graduation by the Logan UT Police Department. I worked in Logan as a Patrolman and on Mountain Bike Patrol until I was hired by the Orem DPS, in September of 1996. I have been here in Orem ever since. Orem was named the most liveable city in 1993, so has gone through a massive growth spurt. Our population now averages 90,000.

The Orem Department of Public Safety is split into two divisions; Police Division and the Fire/Paramedic Division. Currently there are 76 sworn officers in the Police Division, and 53 Firemen in the Fire/Paramedic Division. As a Pubilc Safety Department many of our officers are cross trained as Firefighters/EMT's, and many Firemen are cross trained as Police Officers. Personally I am certified as a Police Officer, Firefighter, and EMT. I am also currently attending Utah Valley State College in pursuit of a degree in Criminal Justice.

On May 6th, 1998 I had the opportunity to sing at the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremonies at the Capitol Building in Salt Lake City. I chose a song entitled, “Let There Be Peace On Earth” . Click here to see some photos of the event (not available yet - sorry). You can also read the speech given by Keynote Speaker Robert Idle (which includes an account of his life threatened experience with an assailant in a stolen vehicle on August 15th 1997).

Not gold, but only man can make a people great and strong;
Men who, for truth and honor's sake, stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep, who dare while others fly
They build a nation's pillars deep and lift them to the sky.
