Brenda Creed - 07/03/00 06:24:26 My Email:BrendaLCreed@aol.com | Comments: Your site really stirred some memories for me and my daughter of our beloved Tom. He was a "van-a-like", a gorgeous red tabby, with the greatest personality. He loved the water and kept himself impecably groomed. When playing, he would stop to fix his hai if it got out of place. He was our "peeping Tom". He'd hide on the bathtub between the shower curtains and reach out at us. He seemed to delight in startling us. We lost Tom, tragically, in January and we were all devastated. He was my daughter's cat and although there'll never be another Tom, we'd like to be owned by one like him again. Can you please e-mail any info you can on pricing for pet, show & breeding quality kittens/cats and any reputable breeders close to Indiana? Thanks for a wonderful site a d for your help. B.Creed |

She has blue and auburn markings on her head and tail, and an auburn spot between her shoulder blades. Her body is white. We live in Australia and have been told th t the breed does not grow a full coat over here, however her coat is still very thick. Thank you for the lovely pictures, I now see that Pushka has a strong resemblance to your lovely kittens. |

Lewis and Dori Rusk - 08/26/99 04:05:10 My Email:ljrusk@hotmail.com Remarks: Nice website! | Comments: I appreciate the chance to explore your site. About nine months ago my wife and I stopped in at the Genesee County Humane Society shelter in Flint, Michigan to look for a companion for our then 2 year DSH-cross, Ricochet. We had looked in nearly all the cages, when at the last one, a beautiful little 4 month old black and white face absolutely captivated us. While my wife went up to arrange the adoption of "Spot" (the name on the cage tag), I zealously guarded our beautiful new friend, as he rubbed against and gently chewed my finger. Once we got him out of the cage and took a good look at him, we were pleased by the wonderful color pattern of his extremely soft and silky coat. Mostly white, Spot had black markings on his head with white extending up to nearly between his ears. is tail was all black, and he also had a nearly perfectly round black spot on his back near his hind quarters, slightly toward the right side of midline (hence the name "Spot", we assumed). A couple of months later, just before Christmas, we were at PetSmart having photos taken of our "boys" with Santa (yes... they are our kids) when Santa said, holding a wiggly and not-too-cooperative Spot... "Oh, he's a Turkish Van." I'd never heard of that before and, thinking it was just a name for the color pattern, quickly forgot about it. A couple few weeks later, as I was thumbing through the back pages in a copy of Cat Fancy, I noticed the name Turkish Van and realized it was a distinctive breed, however, there were no pictures, just a web address. I got on the interent and when I brought up the Turkish Van web site listed in the magazine, I found myself staring into the face of one of Spot's very close relatives! It was absolutely amazing... reading the breed standards, personality characteristics, etc. was like a point-by-point description of our Spot. Especially amazing was the Van's propensity for water. We had thought it very odd that after my wife or I had gotten out of the shower or bath, Spot would jump into the freshly-drained tub and sit in the puddles of water for a few minutes. He always app ared totally unperturbed by having a wet bottom, and after a few minutes, he would jump out like nothing had happened. We thought it was just a psychological oddity with Spot, but when reading about the 'swimming cats of Turkey' it all clicked. He was j st being a Turkish Van. Spot is now nearly 14 months old, and he continues to gain adult Van features and to be a total joy to us... especially me, with whom he seems to have bonded strongly during the ride home from the Humane Society shelter and since. He drives his old r 'sibling', Ricochet crazy, but they are best friends and we all look forward to many years together. I apologize for using so much space here, but just wanted to share the story of the wonderful, if inadvertant, discovery of our Turkish van. Sincerely, Lewis Rusk |
HOLLY TUCKER - 08/24/99 01:55:18 My Email:hstucker@fastlane.net Remarks: interested in a kitten | Comments: I also was stationed in Turkey and heard about the Van cats there. I have a cat from Turkey- not a Van cat- and am interested in getting a kitten, but not until this cat passes- she is 18 yrs now. How much in advance is usually required and about how much are they. I am not interested in showing or breeding, but definatley want a female. Thanks |

Martin Kracklauer - 06/09/99 16:29:35 My Email:mkracklauer@ambion.com | Comments: Cool page! Believe it or not, I've been recently acquired by a stray cat which looks like a Van. The markings are right, and he displays many Van characteristics -- highly interested in running water, reacts to paper crumpling, is very vocal, and will accompany me round the house no matter what I do. He's a quirky cat, but has a certain charm. I've named him Baruch. Not a Turkish name, but he doesn't seem to mind. |
Lauren Chalekian - 06/07/99 21:15:31 My Email:lrchalek@execpc.com | Comments: We recently acquired a cat we believe to be a TUrkish Van, my son found her in the Humane Society in Houghton, Michigan where he is a student at MTU. He chose this kitten because of her unusual characteristics, when he brought her home, a friend, who had previously owned a Van, was the one who told us that it was most likely that breed! Everything I read about the breed perfectly describes this little girl...curious to a fault, daring, VERY active, loves water! Her coloring is beautiful with 2 spots on er body and gorgeous blue eyes! She's 8 months old and already as big as our 7 year old male tabby. She fits the description right down to the continuous movement of her tail even when she sleeps..we found it amusing when we realized that she often grabs it with her front paws to hold it while she sleeps!! I don't know how we can confirm that this is what she really is, and how this kitten found its way to Michigan's Upper Peninsula we can only guess! The other thing we find curious is that my husbands fa ily is Armenian and this area of Lake Van is and has been inhabited by Armenians for hundreds of years! What are the chances of an Armenian family from RAcine, Wisconsin ending up with a cat whose origins are from this ancient area? Anyway, she's a most delightful addition to our family! |

Lauraine Miller Rose - 03/09/99 20:32:21 My Email:laurainm@cwix.com | Comments: We live south of you in corpus christi. We recently had to put down our beautiful Casey, a 16-year-old mixed breed (likely Persian and maine coon) and have become interested in pure breds. We have narrowed our search to Maine Coons and Turkish Vans. We te d to favor large male cats for their lovable natures, intelligence and personalities. Casey was a beautiful boy with a fabulous personality. Some of the manifestations were similar to those of Turkish vans and Maine coons. In fact, a neighbor gave me an a ticle about Turkish vans about 9 or 10 years ago because she thought the personality traits were similar to Casey's. We know we can never replace him, but we are cat-lovers who offer a clean, loving environment and lots of attention. Look forward to heari g from you. Lauraine Miller Rose |

We acquired a Turkish Van in 1980 while living in Houston, Texas. The family that had her brought her from England and when they transfered back they couldn't take her because of the quarantine period. I seem to remember Vans being available (few and far between) in the US then, but not sure how long before we got "Missy". We moved to Colorado in 1981 and our Vet was familiar with the breed, which leads me to believe they were here prior to the 1980's. I have owned cats most of my life, but have never experienced a personality quit like our Van cat. We loved her dearly. |
