Re: Bartow County History From: William C Waller waller@bulloch.com Jean, Here is the genealogy report that I have developed on the Irwins. I spell it Irwin because my great grandfather, James Allen Irwin spelled it that way, but I believe that the Irwins and Erwins are of the same clan. Tracing the Irwin name, I have not gotten past this William Irwin. My Great Grandfather, James Allen Irwin, Sr., was said to have owned a movie theater in Bartow County in the 1920's. He is buried in a plot in Oak View (on Erwin street.), but his date of birth is wrong on the headstone. He earned the French Croix de Guerre during W.W.I.I have been trying to find out information on Pvt. William M. Irwin of the 36th GA, Company A. I cannot locate his grave. I know very little about his service too. I was told that his grave is in Cedartown , but my friends in the Sons of Confederate Veterans say that he is not in there. It would be great to find out more about him. Thanks again for the book, and thanks in advance for your help with the Irwins. Jean,

If you can locate a photo of Pvt. William Irwin, I would be greatly interested! Even if it means buying another history book!! Also, if you know of any living descendants of Pvt. Irwin, please pass them along. I have heard that there are some in Cartersville. Thanks a third time!!Bill ANSWER: Bill on some of the other information you sent on the Irwins. The Swamp Creek Cemetery should be Stamp Creek Cemetery. I located his wife's grave in Cartersville, (William M Irwin) but not his.) most likely in an unmarked grave. Will see what I can find on him.

Mike nash@randomc.com Jean I do not know if you know about this or not....I just stumbled upon it at the Cobb County library tonight. In 1864 the Confederate Government conducted a census to see how many able bodied men there were to refill the ranks of the army. From what I could tell the ages start at 15 and go up to 40's or 50's. It is a counting of all the men who were not currently in the Army. What's neat about it is that they give the occupation and the reason the person was exempt from service. If anyone is interested I will get the exact title and may be willing to do look ups. There were only about 10 pages for Bartow County Mike Wennin Commander Elect Stiles-Akin Camp #670 http://www.randomc.com/~nash RESPONSE: Mike, This is great and will help so many people trying to locate a missing ancestor: The Bartow County Web site can be viewed at http://www.oocities.org/Heartland/Park/9465/bartowcoga.html

Family tree From: Leigh Harting l_harting@hotmail.com I wonder if you can help me - I am looking for some information on the Meadows family. The names that I know are Leo Maurice Meadows, born on July 20, 1913 to parents, John Lee Meadows (born 1875) and Effie Walden Metcalf (born 1881). Could you tell me how I might proceed? I think they lived in Bartow or Washington county and then moved South from there.Thank you, Leigh Harting (813) 571-0266 (813) 495-7489 ANSWER:Leigh, Bartow and Washington Counties have some distance between them. I think you should check the 1880 census for the two Counties. Because if he and she were in one of these counties, they would show up with the parents, or whoever was their guardian at that time. Good Luck.

1843-1870, Cass/Bartow County From: Allen Farquhar farquhar@san.rr.com Thanks for the reply Jean thanks for your attention and quick response I already have the census for 1850, 1860 and 1870 for William and Elizabeth I presume that Wm. EATON died in the 1860s... possibly due to the war, but he was not young, either. I forgot to note Ellen Elizabeth EATON's first marriage to Charles NEILL, probably before 1860. They had two sons:Robert NEILL, b. 1860, and William Edward NEILL, b. 1862. Charles died... an accident, I am told. I don't think I have found the NEILLs in the 1860 census. William Alexander FLEMING was not from local stock. He was a Union soldier serving from Illinois. The soldiers found lodging with locals: William stayed at the home of the young widow Ellen NEILL, then returned after the war to marry her.-allen

Re: Cass/Bartow County research From: gwhtx70@aol.com Well, I'm trying to locate the family of Richard Bledsoe Bell (1846-1912), son of Richard Thomas Bell (1828-1856) and Martha A. Bledsoe (daughter of Moses Bledsoe and Lucy Ann Bowling of Oglethorpe Co., Georgia). Martha A. Bledoe was born in 1836, who later married about 1859 William Raiden, and William and Martha lived in Bartow County and raised their family as well as Martha and Richard's children. Richard and Martha were married in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, on 9/3/1849. Richard Bledsoe Bell is buried, I believe, in Cass Cemetery, Bartow Co., Georgia. He married by about 1880 Sarah "Sally" Salina Epps. I have no info on her family, and am trying to find others from the same family. Their descendants that I am direct descendant of are from Adairsville and Cartersville. I am also trying to find the families of Will W. Price 1846-1927, son of a John Price and Pauline (may be 'Polly' for Mary??) Godfrey, who married Ancy Bell Kay 1864-1925 (I am looking for all of these peoples' families). I was told by my great-grandmother who was born in Cassville, Bartow County, that the courthouse burned and many records were lost? She died when I was 25, but had memory loss, and for the last 10 years of her life, wasn't able to remember anything much at all, much less family histories. If you have any information, please let me know. I live so far out in Texas, and have no time to travel to Georgia (I've never even been to Bartow county) that any help is great I was wondering if you knew anything about Dewey Cemetery, which is listed in a book I found Where is the cemetery located, Gary Hamilton ANSWER: Dewey Baptist Church and Cemetery is close to where I live and if you would like I would take a picture of your stone and send to you. Let me know

HAPPY AND PEACEFUL NEW YEAR TO ALL

Census From: Weldon Moore wmoore@main.com Jean, Having read your message to James, I began to wonder about the 1840 census. My gggrandfather, Robert Scott and his family, moved to Bartow/Cass county sometime i that time frame. They had two sons, John B. Scott b. 1836 in Gwinnette Co., GA and Samuel Hunter Scott b. 1837 in Gwinnette Co. The Scott family lived near the McGregors. Both family lived near Van Wert.I am looking for the name of Robert's first wife. After her death Robert married Sarah Ann Waits before 1842.If you can help me with the name of the first wife, I'd be much in your debt. Thanks so much, Mary Jo Moore The Woodlands, TX

ANSWER: I have checked the 1840 Census for Cass County and do not find your Scott family There are two. A Benjamin and a Moses Scott. Re: [GABARTOW] Evan PEARSON (c1795-c1854) From: Sandra Holik shutterbug1948@yahoo.com to jbelew@bellsouth.net Dear Jean, You have been a great help to me in the past in getting connected with a cousin of mine who lived in Bartow County. (She has since passed away of the cancer she had). I really appreciated getting the chance to know her and she gave me some valuable information on some of our ancestors. What I was wondering was, how would I go about finding out who some of my gggrandparents 2 daughters married. My gg. grandparents were James C. Smalley b.1822 NC, m. to Nancy Elizabeth Witherspoon b. 1829 GA. They had 2 daughters named Julia and Elizabeth. I have been wondering if I could get hold of some of their ancestors to see if they may have the information I need on who James C.'s parents were. I know they lived in Bartow County at one time and in Whitfield County (near Rome, where Nancy Elizabeth is buried - she died in 1900; he died in 1906) thanks! Sandra Smalley Holik ANSWER: Sandra, I would first need to know what kind of information the relative you met in Bartow County Gave you. I do not like giving someone the same information they already have.

Bartow co. help, please! From: ChitCat@aol.com I saw your name on the genealogy help list for this county. Thanks for offering your time for look ups. My name is Cathy and I'm trying to find info on my g-g-grandmother's family. Her name was Martha "Mattie" Jane Potts. She was born between 1867-1869 in Bartow Co. Her parents were Joshua Potts and Nancy J. (I don't know if the J. is a middle initial or first letter of her maiden name). I believe Joshua and Nancy were married in Bartow Co. in the mid-1860s. The family moved to Arkansas around 1870. Joshua's father, I think, was David Potts (b. in SC and died near Cass/Bartow Co.). I would be thrilled to have some real dates on Mattie's birth date and parents' marriage date. Also to find out her mother's full name. Thanks for any help, Cathy Rundell / Seattle Answer" Cathy, I will put you in touch with another Potts Researcher. He lives in Yukon Ok. Kpotts@mail.icnet.net He may be the answer you are looking for.
