1.  CONRAD2 MCQUATE  (PETER1) was born 1821, and died 1900 in Ashland County, OH.  He married SARAH EICHELBERGER August 14, 1845 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Mechanicsburg, PA, daughter of GEORGE EICHELBERGER and CATHARINA ?.  She was born 1826, and died 1907 in Ashland County, OH.

Correspondence from Douglas McQuate, descendant of Conrad:

     Conrad farmed all of his life around the Jeromesville, Ohio area in Ashland County.  In his later years, he and his wife lived with their son, George, at Huntington, Lorain County [OH].

     A newspaper clipping stated that seven or eight years before his death, Conrad cut a walnut tree and had it sawed into boards at the George Morr saw mill.  After drying, he and his son, William, made [Conrad] a casket.  They lined it with appropriate cloth and brought it to W. C. Frazee's undertaking establishment.

     The article names the children and states:  all are living in the central part of Ashland County except Sarah Schroll, his daughter; she is living in Wabash County, Ind.

1850 Census:  Silver Spring Township, Cumberland County, PA.  Conrad McQuate, 29, farmer; Sarah McQuate, 24; George McQuate, 1; Henry Brady, 17.  Living next door:  George Eichelberger, 52, laborer; Sarah Eichelberger, 40; Lewis Eichelberger, 14; John Eichelberger, 11.

Obituary in Wellington Enterprise, 31 Dec 1941:

     Mrs. Jennie Louella Smith, 68, widow of the late Thomas E. Smith, passed away this morning at 9:25 o'clock at the home of her son, Myron Smith, west of town, following an illness of several weeks.  She was recently reported to be improving.

     A member of the First Methodist church, she was also active in the Woman's Benefit Association and the Farm Woman's club.

     She leaves four children, Herman of Pittsfield, Harley of Penfield, and Arlo and Myron of Wellington; three brothers, John McQuate of Litchfield, George McQuate of Wellington, and Andrew McQuate of Huntington; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Lehman of Huntington and Mrs. Pearl Gates of Akron; 10 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

     Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at two o'clock at the Sharp funeral home with the Rev. B. J. Black, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating.  Burial will be made at the Wellington cemetery.

Notes for THOMAS E. SMITH:

Obituary in Wellington Enterprise 1 Jun 1933:

     Thomas Smith (affectionately called "Tom" by his many friends) died Monday evening at 10:30 at his South Main-st. home after a short illness.  The genial Wellington business man had been ill recently but had recovered and was about his duties daily until he was stricken with paralysis at 12:30 a. m. last Friday.  He spent Thursday evening at the softball game and later played cards with friends.  After retiring, he went to the bathroom about midnight and when he did not return Mrs. Smith investigated and found him a victim of a stroke.

     He was unconscious practically all of the time until his death.  He was fifty-seven years of age, having been born June 20, 1875.  Had he lived until June 9, he would have celebrated his fortieth wedding anniversary with his wife, Mrs. Jennie Smith.  A farmer in earlier year, for the past eight years Mr. Smith was manager of the Wellington Oil Co. here.

     He was a member of the Huntington M. E. church, Sons of Veterans, Wellington Business Association, Wellington Grange, and the F. O. E.  He is survived by his wife and four sons, Herman, Harley, Arlo, and Myron; eleven grandchildren and six sisters, Mrs. Ernest Stevenson, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; Mrs. Homer Holland, of here; Mrs. Maude Hull, Mrs. Ralph Thornton, and Mrs. Osea Higgie, of Elyria; Mrs. R. V. Cohagen, of Penfield.

     Rev. Paul Carter will officiate at the last rites, to be held in the M. E. church this afternoon at 2 o'clock.  Burial, in charge of the Wadsworths, will be made in Greenwood cemetery.

     Services were Saturday at the Norton Funeral Home for Andrew J. McQuate, 86, Huntington, who passed away Wednesday evening at the Weber Nursing Home.

     Born in Huntington, he had lived in this area all his life.  He was sexton of the Huntington Cemetery for many years prior to retirement.

     Survivors include three sons, Lester, Huntington, Lloyd, Sullivan, and Donald, Wellington; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Bettley, Cleveland and Mrs. Emma Layman, Wellington.  His wife, Lena, died in 1949.  Two daughters also preceded him in death.

     The Rev. Dale Clark, former Huntington pastor, officiated in the services.

     Burial was in Huntington.
