McQuaids in Ireland Today
Curiosity about the locations of McQuaids in present-day Ireland prompted me to do a search of the phone directories for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is divided up into seven directory areas as shown on the map below. Northern Ireland is served by a separate, UK phone company. Both on-line phone directories were searched, with the results shown in the table below.

Obviously the McQuaids have not strayed too far from their ancestral home base in County Monaghan. Of the total McQuaid listings in the Republic of Ireland, 84% are located in Area 04, (which includes County Monaghan) and the adjacent 01 Area, which is Dublin. Of the 106 McQuaid listings in Area 04, 65% are located in County Monaghan. The spelling variations, in addition to McQuaid and McQuade, found in Area 04 are MacAodha, MacQuaid, MacQuaide, and MacUaid. The on-line phone directory for the Republic of Ireland is located at http://www.goldenpages.ie/dthtml/phonebookframe.html.
The number of McQuaid listings in Northern Ireland is an estimate; I could not make the on-line directory perform that way I wanted it to perform. The on-line Northern Ireland phone directory can be found at http://www.phonenetuk.bt.com:8080/.
On the NEXT PAGE, we look at the locations of McQuaids in Ireland prior to the 20th century.
