Harts High School is the proud home of the first place Lincoln County 11th and 12th grade Young Writers Contest winner, Crystal Howell, the second place 9th and 10th grade winner, Nancy Runyon, and the third place 7th and 8th grade winner, Sara Runyon. Crystal, as the first place county winner, has been invited to attend a writer's workshop and awards assembly at the University of Charleston on April 23, 1999.

The 1998-99 Spelling Bee winners at Harts High School were 7th grade students Allison Katie Dingess and C.J. Rakes. Allison went on to win the sectional spelling championship and then participated in the county competition.

Harts High students Jacqui Frye and Crystal Howell participated in Marshall University's 21st Annual S.C.O.R.E.S. Academic Festival, "Navigation to Excellence," on March 13, 1999. The competition celebrates the educational and artistic excellence of high school students. More than 100 contests permit talented students to match skills with their peers. Jacqui brought home a gold medal in the Vocabulary division.

All West Virginia 8th grade students were asked to participate in an essay contest based on the question 'What is the meaning of personal responsibility?' We are would like to congratulate our county winners Kayla Shelton, Maria Ramey, and Amy Burgess, all of Harts High School.

For the last decade, the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans has published a volume of works honoring and encouraging the young poets of America. Harts High School students Jacqui Frye, Justin Adkins, and Amanda Hensley were invited to be published in the 1999 Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans.

The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of the Valley of Huntington sponsors an annual essay contest addressing the subject of Americanism in order to increase an awareness of what our FREEDOM means to us and the world. Student Crystal Howell participated and was invited to dine with the masons and other participants at the masonic temple in Huntington.

Several of our students participated in the annual West Virginia Challenge Competition. Harts' students swept the county competition, and Allison Dingess and Crystal Eubanks went on to win at the regional competition sponsored by R.E.S.A. in Huntington. Jessica Topping also was named as an alternate. By winning, the girls are now invited to participate in the national competition held in Wheeling, WV.
