A poem on my confidence and, trust in the. promises of God to His children; composed on the day of my, sailing from, Cape town, S. A., for England in June, 1915, after 14 months engaged In Christian work among the hospitable Boers, who are Dutch Reformed in religion and true descendants of the brave and persecuted Huguenots from France and the Netherlands, who became exiles f rom their homes to avoid the' inquisition tortures and the stake, in 1688, after the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, by the wicked and cruel King Louis XIV, in 1685. These dear good Christian fiends in Cape Province were anxious for my' safety, because of the barbarians, the cruel Huns, and their Zeppelins and murderous torpedoes, submarines, aeroplanes, etc.--August, -1918.
No harm shall come near me, nor touch wher'er I dwell
Thou hast set Thy love upon me, and all, is well:
In a long life Thou hast shown me Thy salvation,
And kept away evil from my habitation.
Unto me, dear Lord, loving mercy Thou, hast shown,
For Thy chastening hand within 'my soul hath sown.
The seeds of faith and love, which in strength hath grown,
But my bitter enemies Thou hast overthrown.
Thy journeying mercies, wherever I did go
Has kept me from the pitfalls set, by a wily foe;
Thou hast made me lie down in Thy rich pastures green
And filled my, soul with Thy love and peace, serene.
Thou dost hold the ocean in the palm of Thy hand,
And wilt keep me as safe on the sea as on land;
Thou hast sent me around the world, from shore to shore,
To proclaim Thy pure Gospel, amidst trials sore.
For the Papal cruel foe sought my life to take,
And they would have gladly burned me At the stake.
Thy almighty power saved me through the fray
From the Romish hate and fury until this day.
Thou didst draw me up from the Popish miry clay
Into the peace, and light, of Thy most perfect day.
Thou hast placed my feet on Christ my Rock Divine,'
And on my lips a new Song of Faith sublime.
