The Messerschmitt 109 was the backbone
of the German Luftwaffe during WWII. The bf109 was the creation of Willy
Messerschmitt. It's simple design and easy maintanance would be Germanys
answer to the British Spitfire. These two planes would dominate the skys

The design of the bf109 was so sucessful that after the
war, Spain continued to manufacture the 109 and used it in their
airforce into the 1950s. Of the over 30,000 built, only a few
survive today.
