Jimboz Cardinals Page
The Cardinals have won more World Series than any other National League club, and have a reputation for excellent pitching and outstanding team speed.
After spending most of 1900 through 1925 in the bottom half of the National League standings, the Cardinals used Branch Rickey's revolutionary farm system to build a powerful dynasty around the likes of Frankie Frisch, Jim Bottomley, Pepper Martin, Ducky Medwick, and Dizzy Dean. From 1926 through 1934, the "Gas House Gang" made five World Series appearances and won three World Series championships.
In late 1941, the Cardinals unveiled their farm system's greatest product: Stan Musial. "Stan the Man" proceeded to hit over .300 every season from 1942 through 1958, and his Redbirds made four trips to the World Series and won three World Series championships during that time.
Behind the pitching of Bob Gibson, the speed of Lou Brock, and the power of Ken Boyer, the Cardinals resumed their winnings ways by winning the World Series in 1964 and 1967. They reached the fall classic again in 1968, but were narrowly defeated by Mickey Lolich and the Detroit Tigers 4 games to 3.
Again in the late 1980's, the Cardinals used pitching, speed, and flashy defense to put another string of successful seasons together. Behind the likes of Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith, Terry Pendleton, John Tudor, and Todd Worrell, the Cards reached the World Series three times during the decade and won the championship in 1982.
Great Cardinal achievements include Bob Gibson's spectacular 1968 season (where he allowed only 1.12 runs every nine innings), Lou Brock's 118 stolen bases in 1974, Stan Musial's National League record 17 seasons batting .300 or better, and Mark McGwire's sensational 1998 70 home run season.
