The Yankees are by far the most successful team
in baseball, and some of the greatest players to have ever
appeared in the major leagues have starred in the Yankee
pinstripes. From 1921 through 1964, the Yankees played in a
remarkable 29 World Series, and won 20 World Series
championships!
The Yankees started off as the Baltimore
Orioles in 1901, but after two uneventful seasons they moved to
New York and were known as the New York Highlanders. Though the
team changed its name to the "Yankees" in 1913, the
team did little to distinguish itself prior to 1920. Then came
the Babe....
In 1920, the Yankees obtained Babe Ruth from
the Boston Red Sox and immediately became a powerhouse. Considered by many to be the greatest player to ever play the game, Ruth Ruth led the Yankees to American League pennants in 1921 and 1922, and their first World Series championship in 1923. When they added Lou Gehrig 1925, the Yankees became a force that simply dominated the American League for the rest of the decade. Their 1927 World Series championship team is considered by many the best team to have ever been assembled. In the 1930's, the names began to change but the results just got better. Babe Ruth ended his Yankee career at the end of the 1934 season, but Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Spud Chandler, Tommy Henrich, Charley Keller; Joe Gordon and others led the team to World Series Championships in 1936, 1937, 1938, and 1939. In the 1940's, the names changed but the results just kept on
coming. Joining DiMaggio were the likes of Yogi Berra, Phil
Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel. The Yankees played in five
more World Series, winning four of them.
In the 1950's, the club added a couple of youngsters named
Mickey Mantle and Whitey Ford, and they proceeded to win a
remarkable six World Series championships in eight appearances
between 1950 and 1959.
The team seemed ready to dominate the 1960's by appearing in
each of the World Series from 1960 through 1963, but the fire
finally began to die down. The team experienced its first losing
season in 40 years in 1966, and it failed to reach the World
Series until a decade later.
In 1973, a syndicate headed by George Steinbrenner purchased
the Yankees, and things immediately began to change. Through
major trades, free agent signings, and countless managerial
changes, the Yankees built a team of stars that included Reggie
Jackson, Sparky Lyle, Graig Nettles, Jim "Catfish"
Hunter, and Chris Chambliss. Back on track, the Yankees appeared
in four World Series from 1976 through 1981 and claimed two more
titles.
Following the 1981 campaign, the Yankees suffered through one of the longest droughts in the club's history. Though they remained competitive, it would be 15 years before the Yankees would make it back to the World Series. Then, in 1996, led by Tino Martinez, Derek Jeter, Bernie Williams, Paul O'Neill, and manager Joe Torre, the Bronx Bombers regained their championship form and defeated the Atlanta Braves in the fall classic. In 1998, the Yankees put on one of the greatest shows in sports history. Led by starting pitchers David Wells, David Cone, Orlando Hernandez, and relief specialist Mariano Rivera, New York won an astounding 114 games during the regular season and won the American League East division by an incredible 22 games. They then blew past the Texas Rangers and the Cleveland Indians in the playoffs and then swept the San Diego Padres to win their second World Series title in 3 years.
Great achievements in Yankees history include Babe Ruth's 60
homeruns in 1927 (a record that stood until 1961 when the Yankees' Roger Maris hit 61), Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak in 1941, Don Larsen's World Series perfect game in 1956, and Lou Gehrig's incredible 2,130 consecutive game streak.
