Csiba, Imre "Relatively Yours" ref. no.:
?1740-?1802 * Nagyabony, Hungary
An anecdote has it that Imre Csiba and his friends were returning from a successful hunt in the early hours of one fine morning. Their brains still steaming from the fumes of litres of wine that washed down the roast rabbits and pheasants when they decided to use up the remaining ammunition. A roadside crucifix offered itself an ideal target. Our Imre was either the best shot or the least drunk and scored a direct hit between the eyes of our Saviour. Next day hell broke loose and the ensuing scandal threatened to land him in prison or with excommunication from the Church, or both.
It is not known whether it was from his own free will that he sought forgiveness from the Church and the local populace or was it due to an external pressure diplomatically applied to him, but he offered, as a demonstration of regret of his foolishness, to have a church built. His undertaking was accepted, it seems, as he was neither imprisoned nor expelled from the Church; the church of Nagyabony was built and consecrated in 1768. Today it is a protected national treasure.
Since written documentation of this affair would have led to ex officio charges against him, the matter was settled with a handshake. This story cannot, therefore, be authenticated with written evidence but it is treated as a fact in the Family.
In the crypt of the church lie entombed Imre Csiba, and his son Michael. Ernö Csiba and his wife Eugenia, his daughter Ernesztina and son-in-law László Nagy are buried just outside the church wall facing the main road, under a dark-grey marble tombstone.
The church of Nagyabony.
