The Caroll name derives from the O’Carroll pedigree of Ely O’Carroll of Kings County, Ireland, to Tacheus (Teige) O’Carroll, through Daniel, Donough, William, Donough, Rederic, Daniel, Roderic, Donough, Teige, Donough, Daniel, Anthony, to Daniel of Litterluna in Ireland.
This line derived their name from Cearball, King of Ely, one of the leaders of the victorious native Irish army at the battle of Clontarf in 1014.
Fiam or Florence, King of Ely, who died in 1205, was the ancestor in the fourteenth degree of Charles Carroll, Attorney-General of Maryland in 1688, the first of his line in the US.
Charles Carroll brought the original genealogh in an Irish MS book, which has since
been translated into English. Charles was the 2nd son of Daniel Carroll, Esq., of Litterluna, in the King’s County, in Ireland.

NOTE: In 1776 along with 56 American colonists, Charles Carroll of Carrollton among them,signed the Declaration of Independence. Carroll won his personal independence in 1773 when he bested Daniel Dulany in the controversy over Maryland officials' fees. Replying to Dulaney, known as "Antilon" in the public debates, Charles Carroll had signed his newspaper letters "First Citizen," and this is what he literally became.
At the age of 10, he went to Bohemia Manor Academy run by the Society of Jesus near the Pennsylvania line.
