I am blessed to have a wonderful daughter, Dawn, son-in-law Mike, and three grandchildren, Michael, Joshua, and Cody.

Obituary from the Baltimore Sun, October 4, 1983:
A Memorial Mass for Gerhard E. Helmers, a retired musician, will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ignatius Church, North Calvert and East Madison streets.

Mr. Helmers, who was 83 and lived in Brooklyn, MD, died Saturday in his sleep at the Federal Hill Nursing Home.

He retired in 1969 as the pianist in duos and trios that played at Maria's Restaurant for 19 years.

He also taught in the 1940's at Larry London's Conservatory of Music in East Baltimore and for many years gave private violin lessons at his home, at one time giving individual lessons to 40 students.

From 1939 to 1941 he played the violin with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He also played in the pit bands at the Hippodrome, Fords and other theaters.

Born in Baltimore, he studied at the Peabody Institute.

For many years, he played the organ for the daily Children's Mass at Holy Cross Church. He was also a member of the Third Order Secular of Our Blessed Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Teresa of Jesus, an organization for laymen associated with the Discalced Carmelites.

He is survived by his wife, the former Grace Shaffner; two sons, Roger Helmers of East Berlin, PA, and Gary Helmers of Alabama; a daughter, Sandra Hirsch, of Baltimore, and six grandchildren.

Age 58, of Pinson, AL, died Friday. Retired from the U.S. Navy and Southern Company Services, he was employed with Security Engineers Inc. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Jefferson Memorial Gardens East, Ridout's Roebuck East directing.
