"These people were stern and hardy pioneers and worthy of commendation. A biography found of John Hood is herewith given which may tell of his early life."
"John Hood was born in Larne, Co Antrim, Ireland, in May 1801. When yet a small boy, with his father and three other men, he went on a fishing trip off the coast of Ireland, on the ocean.
"A sudden gale capsized the boat and all were thrown into the waters. All were drowned, but John the boy, who after much labor and hear ache, reached a rock he saw projecting a little out of the waters. (Later a lighthouse was built on this rock)
"Here, like a waif, for 2 days and a night, he remained suffering of course, but with great grief at the loss of his father.
"Vainly he tried to make signals to passing boats that passed him by. He was, however, rescued by friends off shore who had been alarmed at the prolonged absence of the fishing party, and who with aid of telescopes, were scanning the waters, when they noticed a boy on a rock.
"Rescue boats and crew soon had the whole story, from John himself.
"He being the eldest of the family, later became head and protector of it. When 17 years of age, he came to South Carolina and in his 20's he married Sarah Stuart BURNS and settled in South Carolina near Chester, where they remained until the autumn of 1845, when with their family, they moved to Illinois.
"They lived the 1st 2 years on a rented farm in Hill Prairie community and then he entered land on the ridge, about 5 miles west of Sparta, Illinois.
"Here, continuously, they resided until Oct. 1 1879, when in his 79th year he died of heart disease, induced by phneumonia, from which he suffered several weeks.
"He was a Democrat in politics, tho not a politician. He was terperance worker, and was of the Presbyterian (Old School) faith.
"He was a founder and later and elder in the church near his home. He died trusting confidently in Jesus and a happy immortality. Hes wife died after 40 years of happy companionship, and family was grown. He was an Ensign, and went as color bearer in a military company which marched all the way from Chester to Camden, South Carolina, to welcome the return of Laffayette. He was the father of 10 children: 3 sons and 7 daughters."
