Clayton Lawrence CHAPUT: Born 26 June 1912 in his parent's home at
Gwinn, Michigan. Youngest of two children of Henry CHAPUT, a miner, and
Florida DUGAS, a homemaker. Baptized summer of 1912 at Saint Anthony's
Catholic Church in Gwinn, Michigan. Home had no electricity, no running
water, no plumbing. Attended Gwinn School 1917-26. Mother died of
myocarditis in 1923 when Clay was 11. Father married Rose REMILLARD in
1925. Attended Gwinn High School 1926-28. Quit school and ran away
from home in 1928 or 29. Worked on and off as a laborer until he
enlisted in the Army May 1931. Various assignments including Panama
Canal, California, Illinois and Michigan. Met Mildred ALBERT 1937,
engaged 25 December 1938, eloped and married on 23 December 1939 at
Lexington, Kentucky, Assigned to Fort Ord, California 1940-41.
Graduated from Signal Corps School's Officer Candidate course 30
September 1941. Commissioned a Second Lieutenant on 1 October 1941.
First son, Alan Bruce CHAPUT, born 14 October 1941 at Fort Monmouth, New
Jersey. Second son, Clayton Albert CHAPUT, born 20 August 1943 at
Dearborn, Michigan. Served in Canada as commanding officer of an air
base 1943-45. Promoted to Major 1944. Served in China as signal
advisor to the Chinese army 1946-48. Received "Order of Yun Hui"
decoration from National Government of the Republic of China in 1947.
Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 1947. Various assignments in Georgia,
Massachusetts and New York as commanding officer for 24th Signal
Battalion 1950-53. Certified for crypto clearance 1951. Served in
Germany as signal officer of 9th Infantry Division and as chief of
signal operations for the 7th Army 1953-55. Top secret clearance 1953.
Retired from Army 31 October 1955. Worked as cost study engineer for
Pacific Bell Telephone from 1955-65. Deceased 21 November 1965 at West
Covina, California of carcinoma of lung. Interned at Arlington National

Henry CHAPUT: Born 22 March 1887 at Goose Lake, Michigan. Seventh child
of Onesime CHAPUT, a trapper, and Melvina LABRIE, a homemaker. Mother
died in 1893 of typhoid fever when Henry was five. Married Florida
DUGAS 1909. First son, Milton, born 1910 at Munising, Michigan. Second
son, Clayton, born 1912 at Gwinn, Michigan in his parent's home. No
electricity, no water, no plumbing. Father died 18 June 1919. First
wife, Florida, died 1923. Married second wife, Rose REMILLARD, 1925.
Due to asthma Henry quit mining in 1925 to become a timber jobber.
Owned and operated two taverns in New Swanzey. Died 9 December 1950 in
Forsyth Township, Michigan of carcinoma of stomach following a year's

Florida DUGAS: Born 20 February 1890 in Quebec. 5th of 13 children of
Peter DUGAS, a farmer, and Cordellia TREMBLEY, a homemaker. By 1896
Florida was living at Little Lake, Michigan. Married Henry CHAPUT
1909. First son, Milton, born 1910 at Munising, Michigan. Mother died
1910. Second child, Clayton, born 1912 at Gwinn. Deceased 5 July
1923. Florida died from complications arising from a goiter operation
at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She died a few weeks after she
returned to Gwinn. Cause of death, myocarditis. Interned at Gwinn,

Rose REMILLARD: Born 4 August 1891 at Ishpeming, Michigan. Second wife
of Henry CHAPUT. Married Henry 1925. Three children with Henry: Bob (b
1926), Donald (b 1928) and Joanne (b 1931). Deceased 24 July 1969.
Interned at Neguanee, Michigan. Submitted by Alan Bruce Chaput
Onesime CHAPUT: Believed born 15 September 1818 in Quebec. Father was
Ferdenart (?) CHAPUT, mother unknown. According to 1900 census he
immigrated to US in 1855. It is unknown when he married Melvina LABRIE.
Melvina was born in Canada in 1850 at Ville de Lansing. 11 children.
1880 census shows Onesime and Melvina living on Clark Street in
Negaunee. Onesime logged at Goose Lake for the charcoal kilns. Henry,
their ninth child, was born in 1887. Melvina died in 1893. 1900 census
shows Onesime (known as "Jim") living in Richmond Township. 1910 census
shows Onesime (known as "James") living in Brampton Township, Delta
County. Polk's 1915-16 Directory for Delta County shows Onesime residing
on 40 acres of Section 34 of Brampton Township. Deceased 18 June 1919.
