16 Specialized Agencies within the UN system
IMO
- The International
Maritime Organization is the United Nations'
specialized agency responsible for improving
maritime safety and preventing pollution from
ships.
- ILO
- The International
Labour Organization seeks the promotion of social
justice and internationally recognized human and
labour rights.
- UPU
- The Universal Postal
Union by virtue of its mission to promote and
develop communication between the people of the
world, is called upon to play an important
leadership role in promoting the continued
revitalization of postal services.
FAO
- The Food and
Agriculture Organization was founded to raise
levels of nutrition and standards of living, to
improve agricultural productivity, and to better
the condition of rural populations.
UNESCO
- The United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
contributes to peace and security in the world by
promoting collaboration among nations through
education, science, culture and communication in
order to further universal respect for justice,
for the rule of law and for the human rights and
fundamental freedoms which are affirmed for the
peoples of the world, without distinction of
race, sex, language or religion, by the Charter
of the United Nations.
IBE
- The International
Bureau of Education is a UNESCO centre for
information and research in the field of
comparative education. It focuses on the renewal
of education curricula, contents, methods and
materials, with particular emphasis on human and
civic values.

change related activities, ozone layer depletion
studies and tropical storm forecasting, the World
Meteorological Organization coordinates global
scientific activity to allow increasingly prompt
and accurate weather information and other

industries.

for the promotion of the protection of
intellectual property throughout the world
through cooperation among States, and for the
administration of various multilateral treaties
