A young man found his old neighbor planting an olive tree. Knowing that an olive tree takes many years to mature, he thought his old neighbor to be very foolish and probably senile. Being a brash young man, he said so. With an air of superiority, he asked, "Why do you bother to plant this tree? You will never live to see it mature or to pick its olives."
The wise old man did not get angry. He simply answered, "No, the tree is not for myself. I am planting this olive tree, so that my children and grandchildren and my ancestors in future generations will all benefit from its harvest."
