Hi Charlene,

Your email has got me back into the genealogy mode. And, you're in luck. I have
answers to two of your questions.

First let me tell you the story I heard from my elders over the last 50 years.
Thomas Conway was indeed in the Civil War. As I heard it, he enlisted in the
Union Army. He got in by lying about his age. As I remember it he was a "mule
skinner." When he was discharged, the government was low on cash so he accepted
100 acres of land in Iowa. He then walked back home to Ohio with the deed in his
shoe. After returning home he then traveled to Iowa and claimed his land. Thus
the town of Conway. (Now I might have surmised the last part after seeing Conway
on a map.)

After your last email I dug through my file and found about 50 pages from Thomas
Conway's military file. So here's the real facts from those papers. Thomas F.
enlisted in Company K, 113 Regiment Ohio Infantry on January 14, 1864 for three
years. He stated his age to be 18 (real age 17). His "mark" was witnessed by
the recruiting officer. (These papers and copies of Census forms show he could
neither read now write.) He was muster in on January 19th in Urbana, Ohio.
Bounty due $300. The file includes his pay records and shows he muster out on
July 6, 1865. He was last paid on April 30, 1865 and was still owed $120. (So
maybe the land deal was true.) He was shown as a private and the Div. Cattle
Guard. The file also contains claims for "Invalid" and widows pensions, marriage
and death certificates, along with several affidavits which describe some of the
things he did, where he was and how he was injured. The 1860 Census indicates
that Dennis (Thomas' bother) is the head of the household. This maybe why the
researcher thought the father's name was Dennis verses Michael.

The file I have is one of four that were created by my Aunts Peg (Rosemary) and
Elaine in 1987 for our family reunion that year. My dad gave me his copy a
couple of years ago. And yes, Aunt Elaine was Elaine Davey, now Elaine Lazure.
She and her husband live in our grandparents' old house in Omaha. One of my
childhood memories was holding the family bible. My guess it is the bible you
are interested in; also, I bet she still has it or knows where it is. Aunt Peg
is on the internet at the address above (I'm sending her a CC: And I bet I got
something wrong and she will let me know. Hi, Aunt Peg. I hope I remembered to
tell you about this when we meet in DC. ;)

OK, what else? Oh yes, I think you're right on the Teresa Anna Conway
(b12-14-1852 d12-26-1939) dates. The 1900 Census would agree according to my
notes, which I don't believe are viewible in the Ancestry.com tree.

Lastly, I would like to get the Michael P. family names, dates, etc. Also, I am
interested in the Annals of Iowa book. Was it coauthored by your aunts? The
name Betty Bowler sounds familiar but I don't remember whether we met.

Well, it time to send this off. I will be off-line from 5/24 to 6/2.

Later, Dan

Following his father's death, the family joined the Malone and Marshall
families traveling by covered wagon to Madison County. The Conways settled
on a farm near Winterset in 1868.
